Squats are really great....as are lunges, for legs that is...
At my age, I prefer the Smith equipment for this though...yes it doesn't
create as much fine muscle work, since the bar and weights are on a track, but
it does help avoid injury, and allows you to take it slow at first.

BUT, definitely do this under the guidance of a personal trainer.
I can't imagine how anyone can do effective workout without a trainer.
