RE: Re: [MTC Global] [Big Debate] Investing huge amount on college infratstructure may be a waste

I agree with Prof. Kiran Paranjape. Campus, Infrastructure, academic facilities, faculty, sports and recreational facilities, events, each one of them has an important role to play for well-rounded education and should be viewed independently. Belief that students with pocket full of money are dumb is in itself  a dumb idea. I believe highest fee in management education is charged by ISB and their students are out of the best in the country getting plum offers even before they leave the campus.

Dear Sir, The discussion on college infrastructure is taking an interesting turn.
College education occupies that phase of life of an individual when the mental and physical faculties are peaking. This is period when the person is bristling with energy and creativity and is willing to challenge the world... The role of the college infrastructure cannot be underplayed.

India boasted of schools and colleges set in sprawling campuses with a plethora of facilities for sports, libraries, club rooms, Auditoriums both big and small, workshop facilities(for developing some craft or skills of hand)and amphitheaters for outdoor functions, Gymnasiums for physical development, even farmland for actual work in the fields. We need all these even more.

Real estate operators make caricatures of these facilities which prove to be counter productive.
The Colleges in the country must cease to think in the paradigms of the 9-5 cultures. Education is ceaseless ( not in the formal sense of classroom lectures but out of classroom interactions as well)
All this may sound utopian but they have been created and have well served the cause of an all round development of the individual.

I feel that investing in facilities is by itself not a waste but its abuse or misuse certainly is. As an example, when school auditoriums are hired out for marriage functions for the simple reason that they are not in use, then such an infrastructure is certainly a waste. School play grounds for public rallies or college conference rooms for private parties. The list is endless.
When something is not used for its intended purpose then it is waste.
Best regards,
Kiran Paranjpe

But this is the eye catcher and the biggest satisfier from the student view ( who are in the age group of teens and early twenties) and obviously students force their parents to get them admitted in those institutes and so colleges win in making money... Their investments are having good returns. This is the reason why even colleges are not bothered about recruiting best teachers as they are convinced that the students join the institute as they have best infrastructure.

Absolutely right. Money is wasted on brick & mortar rather than investing for more "wiser" things.

Take a look what happened to News Paper Industry? Massive investment on land, plant and other assets may not be fetching return as envisaged one decade ago. Same may be case for Colleges investing huge amount to develop physical Infrastructure.
