Re: Re: [MTC Global] Address the poverty issue through management education

Dear All,

All thanks to Professor Raj for sharing his work with MTCG.

Poor (below poverty line) are those who cannot meet the bare necessities of
life-Roti, Kapada and Makan.

It is an excellent suggestion that Management Education needs to address to
poverty issue. In fact poverty issue is related closely with several factors
like location (tribal/rural), culture, health, education, literature, political
will and what not.

Nevertheless Management Education stresses on profit making, productivity, ROI,
etc. Even if 2% population of India means one of the biggest market in the world
and India is a wonderful place to do business! In such a scenario, the
suggestion of inclusion of poverty in Management Education is the most welcomed
thing but its outcomes on Indian economics/policies need to be defined.

Regards.

Yours,

Bholanathji brought an important issue to make poverty as part of curriculum /
Management Education. At the outset it must be the part of Business Economics
subject. The ecosystem of any business is surrounded by society. The poverty
level of the society, directly influence business, products and services.

Important point raised is whether Management Education can be used to address
poverty issues. Govt. Policies related with poverty say Food Security Bill, RTE,
MGNREGA etc. are implemented by Administration Execution Machinery run by IAS.
Without entering in to controversy of effectiveness of execution and interfering
in to the existing system the issue is how we can contribute as Management
fraternity through Management Education.

Management Institution must take the responsibility of development of society
around their geography. They must play their societal role in addressing poverty
issue. Beside vast student power they can make use of CSR aspects of Industry.

Post retirement, I have taken the rural project of “Improving the
Quality of Life†. Poverty word I avoid. The Project is “Rural Empowerment
through ICT†. It is through my own funds in a village in Ambala (Haryana). It
include both products and services. Basic strategy is that rural people should
not leave village and should earn extra by remaining at village only. To
illustrate a simple project is to  Train people as Drivers. There is a
huge demand for part time drivers in City. ICT is used to provide connectivity.

On Education / Training front the Project is:

One way of  addressing this problem is to rope in Corporates under CSR

RE: [ACEsthetics] YOUNGEST AGE THAT YOU WOULD WHITEN TEETH??

There are absolutely no age restrictions from a “safety” issue.  The scientific literature is in 100% agreement with this.

Many are afraid that the larger size of the pulp is a problem, but in reality it’s just the opposite.  First of all, we know for a fact that the full molecular form of hydrogen peroxide gets into the pulps of teeth within 15 minutes of the start of whitening.  This applies to both at-home and in-office whitening.  So the question is, what will handle this better?  A narrow, fibrous pulp with compromised circulation, or a young, large, very healthy and vascular pulp?

I’m sure that everyone knows that Dr. Van Haywood is the leading academic based researcher.  In his lectures, Van states that there is no upper or lower age limit to whitening.  He makes exactly the same analogy that I just did above.  And he also states that the literature is in 100% agreement on this.

Van goes on to say that you could whiten the teeth of a 5 year-old…but then, why would you want to.  He then discusses that several times he HAS whitened children that young due to some very unusual circumstances.  And because he’s the most well-known university based researcher, he has people come to him for weird stuff.

I believe that I was the first to popularize the idea that age 14 is the ideal age to whiten.  That was what I stated back years ago in my first whitening book.  In our KöR Whitening brochures for patients, we even state that age 14 is the most ideal age to whiten.  The reason has nothing to do with safety.  Bottom line is that we know that the younger teeth are, the brighter they will whiten and the faster they will whiten…and with occasional maintenance, they can maintain that color for a lifetime.  So the younger the better.  At age 14 most often all of the permanent teeth are in, so that’s a good time to whiten.

Some are concerned that the teeth are still not fully erupted even at age 14 – that over the following few years you’ll get more gingival recession.  Some are concerned that the tooth structure that becomes exposed will be darker – but that’s not the case.  We know that bleaching factors (mostly the hydroxyl and perhydroxyl radicals) move through enamel laterally very well.  And at age 14, the bleaching factors move through enamel even much faster.  So the bottom line is that the tooth structure under the gingival margins will whiten, even though you can’t see it at the time.

I had a combination of congenitally dark teeth, plus diffuse tetracycline staining.  My son inherited the congenitally dark teeth from me.  At age 11 he told me that other kids were asking him why his teeth were so dark, so he was concerned.  So I started whitening him at age 11.  But had to make him new trays about once a year for a few years.

Many have seen the pictures of my daughter Shannon.  She’s our KöR “cover girl”.  I whitened her teeth at age 14, and she wears her whitening trays only about twice a year, for just one night.  She’s almost 28 now.  Here’s her photo, and this is not re-touched or Photoshopped in any way.

Van Haywood said that in his experience, because of the larger, more vascular pulp, he sees LESS sensitivity with younger people than he does with adults.  That hasn’t really been my experience.  What I’ve seen is that it’s about the same.  Of course you will get young patients, as well as adults who have NO sensitivity, but then you’ll see young patients as well as adults with a lot of sensitivity.  There’s a lot more to it than just age.

Re: Re: [MTC Global] Address the poverty issue through management education

Dear Sirs, Should Poverty Management be taught in a B-school? I am uncertain as to the reasons for suggesting this area for management education. If we consider that business education is primarily driven by the opportunities existing, created or evolving as a result of various forces operating at a point in time, then it is difficult to comprehend how Poverty Management can provide a successful career option for the students of a B school.
Historically, poverty as a subject been studied for a long time by well known economists from Adam Smith, to Marx, Keynes, Galbraith and in India by well known economists most notably Amartya Sen. I think, that the persistence and growth of poverty, and its eradication has bedeviled the most astute minds and is actually the centerpiece of the the welfare programs of any Govt.

The subject of inclusive growth engages the Govt and policies such as tax reliefs, CSR participation and other initiatives to rope in the Corporate sector. These policies are seen by the corporate sector as a necessary evil. They limit their involvement to the extent that the activities are seen for Brand promotion.
It must be understood that poverty management does not by itself become a profitable business activity. Due to the stigma of profit making associated with all charitable, social and community activities, corporates stay away from taking up these activities. Those who do so expose themselves to the charge of exploitation ( an many are possibly doing it). An example of this are the Microlending companies set up to counteract the role of the local moneylender and shown up as models of how to promote growth of small businesses. These were later found to charge far higher interest rates then even the local moneylender!

The subject of poverty and its management ought to address the Social workers, the Administrators and the politicians as well as concerned citizen activists. I believe none of these are to be found among the students of today.

I tend to believe that that Poverty cannot be eradicated and that the responsibility of coming out of poverty rests with the poor to a very large extent.
Best Regards,
K.Paranjpe

2013 GCE Results Released.

The results of the 2013 session of the General Certificate of Education, GCE both Ordinary '0' and 'A' levels have just been released today July 31.

So far candidates have been scarmbling at the GCE board office at Sandpit in Buea to get results in vain. The results have not been handed out to newspaper outlets or sold to business persons as was initially the case.

How to get the results

An official of the GCE board explained that to get a candidates' result the only medium is now throu the use of a mobile phone. The user( student, parent or guardian) dials the center number of the candidate , then the candidate's number and then sends a request to 8070. and then wait for the candidates results." It might take some time since the network is busy," said our source who did not precise why the innovation and whether those out of Cameroon can benefit from such a service.

How to get the results then

Dial CENTER NUMBER OF CANDIDATE, THEN CANDIDATE NUMBER AND THEN DIAL 8070 .SEND THE REQUEST(DIAL OK) and wait for the candidate's results.

NB do not sepearte or leave any space between the Center and candidate number

NB: I have not tried the proposal form the GCE Board official. So do not 'hang' me if it does not work. if it succeeds please inform us that it works.

All attempts at getting to the Registrar, Sir Humphry Monono are yet to yield fruits.

For Now the National Broadcasting CRTV Younde is the only station reading the results.

[MTC Global] UK plans to expand education-exports industry and attract 90.000 extra overseas university students by 2018

Developed in partnership with the education sector, the International Education Strategy will ensure British schools, universities, colleges and education businesses continue to stay ahead in the global education market – worth almost £3 trillion annually.

According to a Foreign Office release the strategy aims to secure an extra £3 billion worth of contracts for the UK’s education providers overseas, and attract almost 90,000 extra overseas university students by 2018.

The strategy will also strengthen education partnerships with other countries, particularly emerging economies, expand the Chevening Scholarship program which sees future global leaders study in the UK, and encourage more UK students to spend time overseas.

The strategy was highlighted by several British ministers.
