As I recollect a few CEOs as early as in 1980 from TISCO, Jamshedpur registered for PhD as external candidates in IIT, KGP and a number of defense personnel were doing their M Techs.
Shivaji University, Kolhapur, had introduced ME (Research), without any course work, mainly for industry personnel 5 decades ago. Under the UGC pattern, there are three types of PhDs: Full Time with course work, residential for 6 months with course work and external PhD. I know one case in the Pune University wherein the candidate did PhD self-guided about 2 decades ago.
Even for M E Dissertation I go for industrial live problems. Industry association for PhD is a must. Undoubtedly, research-industry-institute need to go hand in hand to have a real value addition to the professional knowledge.

Yes, this is the need of the hour especially in management education. This will also contribute to Academia-Industry-Interaction (AII in literature). Further, the institutions would also get faculty as executives desire change in their routine and give meaning to their experience. Better to design a format and circulate among Universities.
