A single national board for schools will be named soon to streamline the country's education system, union human resource development minister Prakash Javadekar said here on Monday.
The central government was taking several steps to strengthen and streamline both school education and higher education system, he said at the 15th convocation of University of Petroleum and Energy Studies.
The proposed board will be created by combining Central Board of School Education (CBSE), Council for the Indian School Certificate Examination and other national boards.
The single board will focus only on board examinations, he said.
The announcement comes at a time when CBSE is conducting National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test examination 2017 which was challenged in the Madras high court and received a stay on declaration of results by the Supreme Court on Monday.
"We are working on developing a single board with single window system. The national board would conduct examination across the country. From affiliation to other necessary events, the board would be made capable enough to take decision on its own," he told the media later.
Concerned over the quality of higher education that is diverting Indian students to foreign universities, he said a corpus of ₹20,000 crore has been set aside to survey loopholes and suggest measures in this accord.
"The much-required sweeping reforms are underway in the higher education system of India wherein the regulatory mechanism would be rationalised and recalibrated to ensure positive outcomes leading to speedy growth of the country including earmarking ₹20,000 crore towards R&D," he said.
"(Prime Minister Narendra) Modi's vision is that by 2030 India should be the third largest human resource for science & technology in the world," the minister said.
He also said nearly 600 faculties from 58 nations were a present working in the country for a global system of education.
Uttarakhand governor KK Paul said University of Petroleum and Energy Studies and Indian Institute of Technology-Roorkee were ranked among the country's top 100 universities.
"Our country has some of the largest reserves of coal in the world, but we are unable to harness them. The problem is of sequestering Carbon dioxide. While going in for non conventional sources of energy, we need to carry out research, so as to simplify this process of conversion and make it cheaper so that our coal can be fully utilized in a non polluting manner," he said.
Chief minister Trivendra Singh Rawat and higher education minister Dhan Singh Rawat were also present at the convocation, where 2,645 students were awarded degrees.
