The elephant in the classroom is the lack of necessity to learn in the true sense of the term. Many of us,known to be excellent teachers, refuse to go in for teaching. The first question we are asked is-will you give notes? I say NO as loudly as I can and the revolt begins. Not that it bothers me.
So many teachers inadvertently promote non reading habits, a no platform to develop thinking leave alone critical thinking, the ability to make decisions and the courage to make mistakes and take risks.
Marks-institutions,parents ,and all and sundry depend on that one figure on paper for everything worthwhile in life. This after life proves that those all who got the highest scores dont necessarily do anything worthwhile with their lives or for others.I was very fond of telling my backbenchers that I have years of experience of being in their seat and I love them-for from them will be born the success stories.
How do we make our students understand the feeling of what knowledge does to oneself ?
So as a clever teacher we need to allow them to rest; identify the good ones and push their boundaries;identify the slacker who has potential and hammer the wits out of them and make them perform.
Which brings me to my biggest elephant in the herd-the systemic need to beat down a brilliant mind or a risk taker or a valuable resource into an average being .
How then do we talk student engagement.?
by taking to class multiple levels of content and get the smart ones the more challenging work. Which goes back to my first statement-making learning relevant and at individual capacity levels.
