Re: [MTC Global] Harvard Business School Examines Nonprofit Management In India In New Executive Education Program

Wide scale misappropriation is a world wide phenomena and I can go on listing names of banks and energy houses that have looted the public-except that they do it professionally and with such elan and gentlemanliness; the social sector is also getting there alright.
Raj Panjabis vision is commendable : a hundred people have tried it and given up.For two reasons: we ,in the urban geographies 'see ' poverty in the rural and Tier B/C towns and wish to eradicate it little realizing no one there wants it eradicated .Esp in India .Poverty today has become a passport to hold the Government to ransom-come any elections there is money enough and electronics enough to live comfortably. Why work? If you feel I should work give me a 15000 Rs job that is cushy enough for me to relax .Attitude to work is a study/research  that someone  should conduct /research. I often tell people if they find a job like the one they are describing to whistle to me-I too would  like to apply for it .
Second and the bigger evil is the way the Government representatives have their tentacles in every bit of our lives. So Raj would be spending a fortune to enter the village , pay the representatives all the time and every time and  a whole  lot of small minions and then the Panchayat and so on and on...
Yet there are countries that broke this shackle because the community came together-Africa.Nigeria and Ethiopian growth in Primary Education  is stunning. Their interventions in health absolute success stories. Their rehabilitation of a society from the brink of disaster truly heart warming and a success story for eternity.( Off the cuff: The  First Grader-a movie worth watching a zillion times of the 84 yr old primary school student)
Yet we are slipping into the lowest positions on maternal deaths ,infant mortality and education because we find reasons on why the Management student cannot join the social sector and the reason? because there is misappropriation. No Sir-we dont join because we have no sense of the dignity of labor.

Dear All,
HBS Programs will certainly bring credibility to Non-Profit / NGO sector initiatives and start-ups.
  • Social Entrepreneurship is looked down upon by all due to wide scale of misappropriation of grants and funds; even Social Corporate Responsibility is no exception.
On the other side of the world, Raj Panjabi hads a wish: to train an army of community health workers to bring care to the doorsteps of those who lack access. Learn more at

BOSTONJune 5, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Harvard Business School (HBS) Executive Education will launch Strategic Nonprofit Management—India on the campus of Ashoka University in India from July 31–August 4, 2017. Offered in association with Ashoka University and Dasra, India's leading strategic philanthropy foundation, this new program will examine best practices in strategy, governance, and leadership for India's nonprofit sector.

The nonprofit sector in South and Southeast Asia is vibrant and growing, with more than three million organizations registered in India alone. With the proper focus on mission, strategy, operations, and governance, senior leaders in India's booming nonprofit sector have the potential to make significant progress in addressing diverse social challenges. This program will prepare nonprofit leaders to build and lead an organization capable of driving meaningful social change.

"Operating a nonprofit organization in an emerging economy like India's presents senior leaders with many unique obstacles and opportunities," said Frances Frei, UPS Foundation Professor of Service Management and Senior Associate Dean for Executive Education at Harvard Business School. "Social challenges – ranging from ensuring access to clean water to expanding educational opportunities – require thoughtful solutions. This program provides senior leaders with an opportunity to reflect on their organization's direction and develop strategies for making a difference in their region."

The program curriculum will analyze how nonprofit organizations in South and Southeast Asia have seized opportunities to create social impact. Participants will learn through case studies, faculty presentations, classroom discussions, small-group workshops, guest speakers, and panel discussions. Areas of focus will include establishing a focused mission and a disciplined approach to strategy, performance measurement and improvement, responsible governance, and effective leadership.

"We place a real emphasis on South and Southeast Asia in this program, with roughly two-thirds of our case studies based on organizations in the region," said V. Kasturi Rangan, Malcolm P. McNair Professor of Marketing and faculty chair of Strategic Nonprofit Management—India. "Examining the practices of successful nonprofits in the region will enable participants to hone their management skills. Participants will return to work better equipped to define what success means for their organizations and develop the capabilities and external relationships they need to execute on their strategies."

Strategic Nonprofit Management—India is designed for senior decision makers at nonprofit organizations operating in South and Southeast Asia. Typical participants will be executive directors, chief executive officers, board members, or other senior leaders of nonprofits, as well as executives who work closely with the nonprofit sector. This program is underwritten with generous financial support from Ashoka University. Nonprofits of all sizes and sectors are encouraged to apply.

As with other HBS Executive Education offerings, Strategic Nonprofit Management—India will rely on research from leading HBS faculty, discussions with industry peers, and learnings from real-world case studies from successful global companies.
