China established first modern university 25 years later than India did. But, several universities in china are included in the ranks of top 200 in the world and India has none. The most importnant negative factor is reservation of seats in teaching and research in all courses fir those who have very low ability and merit. We may not accept it due to preoccupations, but nothing can surer than truth. Caste discrimination, deprivation etc are social issues and have nothing to do with research. Research is our weakest component. We are awarding doctorate degrees in large numbers without meaningful research.

This is really sad that none of the Indian institute or university could secure any position among top 100. But the approach of teaching in India, the bookish style, very little scope for exploration makes our students to follow rather than to lead. Another concern is faculty in Indian higher education sector are not well paid(except IIT and IIMs and some premier institutes). So talented people don't opt of career in this sector. After medical, Engineering this is third choice.
