Thank you, Dr. Waghodekar. I am not sure as a young student I had any emotional affinity with any of the textbooks. I still remember the days when for the first time I got to touch and feel a book printed on ivory paper which was published in America The pages of the book smelled good and felt smooth as silk.
In the olden golden days, students will rip apart a Desi textbook and share various chapters among themselves and when the exam was over they will toss them out in the garbage. Sometimes, important texts were sold as second-hand books for a ticket to go to the cinema. Used books are still being sold in some places in India. I came across a big market for used books in Hyderabad in 1990 when I was traveling there.
If the eBook is made available free why bother about its cost to the writer or those using them. He/she has made it available without using any ink or cutting trees. There is a cost of producing food also. Consumption always comes with a cost. Since we are living in the digital era we need to embrace the concept of eBooks for the sake of the new generation that is now emotionally bonded to their mobile device than any textbook. That is the reality. Products like Kindle from Amazon are actually taking care of the second point you made. As alawys, it is nice to hear from you. Cheers.

But the following queries peep in my mind regarding e-books and printed books:
- Which gives better and sustainable understanding or consolidation?
- e-books need energy supply and web-source (controlled by the third party), for printed books natural light is enough. How to compare safe use and control of e-books and printed books?
- Which extends more emotional or affinity touch?
- Cost-benefit analysis of e-books and printed books?

One option is to use eBooks, especially those available free. Usual tasks, such as assignments, quizzes or projects based on eBooks chapters will yield better results. Yes, hard copies of books are out of fashion. Students will use a textbook only if the course was mapped closely to its chapters.
Today an average person creates and consumes more information than any time in human history. The internet, increased connectivity, 3G/4G Wi-FI networks and vast repositories of information freely available online has diminished the usefulness of printed textbooks. Textbooks and reference books are also very costly, hence they are becoming obsolete. Use of digital content in academic course and program is the way to move forward.

--Thank you Prof. Dutta,
This question is always in my mind.
I wonder millions of research articles/books being published by universities of well repute, but not read by common people.
One of the article written by German professor says 90% of the research articles are not read by the people who could use it for making a change.
Some scholars may give an answer to this?
