Re: [MTC Global] [Weekend Big Discussion-I] The most productive countries in the world do not work more

Productivity: Enhanced productivity generally comes when an employee has right balance of Working Time and Free Time. Free time at work place and quality time spent with the family. In CPM (Critical Path Method), a process in production can be completed in many ways. But a good manager should opt for the process in which the worker has maximum leisure or free time. This enhances productivity.    This FREE time, gives the opportunity to employee with right attitude to think, plan and visualise her/his next work.

Abraham Lincoln said: I have 1 hour to chop a tree, I will sharpen my axe for 45 minutes. This is the importance of planning for executing a right job.

The main reason: In India we have little scientific studies carried out for most of the jobs falling in public sector organizations, namely, Job design and job evaluation are totally missing at least in public sector organizations. This leads to non-setting of target for individual job.  Process and performance management need to be in place.

I was working with M/S  K/B Ltd., Kirloskarwadi in 1972s in Industrial Engineering Department as ME Trainee. Through Time and Motion study the output (target/shift) used to be set as a standard output that was used for monthly regular payment and bonus calculation. One machinist used to sleep literally two hours during a shift of 8 hours nearby the machine,  but nobody could bang him simply because in this particular case the machinist, extraordinary skilled one, used to produce almost 10% more than standard output in 6 hours!

In public sector, including university, educational institutes, government Offices (like Collector, tahsildar, DTE, AICTE, UGC, State Exam. Boards, etc.), banks, municipal corporation, etc.,  we have hardly any quality policy nor the output specified per working day. Is it not true?

Dear all,

There is one more problem in our nation is that, we have to stay back in office even after completion of the task. The protocol is to follow the working hours though productive or unproductive.

There is nothing like work from home or prepare from home and come to office once it's required and then go back.

I don't know why the rules are made to curb productivity.

Ours is a very interesting concept-we work long hours because we dont do anything on time.I go to a Government office mid morning-coffee time; later its lunch and then its evening coffee.Suddenly at 4 everyone is so active till 6.That  apart we believe a child who sits for hours with his textbook is learning max; we believe it of our work too
And IT guys though are being slave driven. It s an attitude problem and has had disastrous consequence on the health of the young

The most productive countries in the world do not work 8 hours per day. Actually, the most productive countries have the shortest workdays.
People in countries like Luxembourg are working approximately 30 hours per week (approximately 6 hours per day, 5 days per week) and making more money on average than people working longer workweeks.
