Subject: [ACEsthetics] New Concerns about Zithromax (azithromycin)

A recent study in the NEJM has found that azithromycin is associated with 2.5X higher risk of cardiovascular events or death vs. amoxicillin in the general population. The risk was found to be 10X greater in high-risk cardiovascular patients! It has been suggested that it could cause heart arrhythmias during the period when the drug is actually being taken.

They are not yet calling for the product to be pulled, but certainly they are suggesting that health care providers take medical history into consideration before willy-nilly prescribing Z-paks.

On a side note, with the longer elimination time of Zithromax, allergy can also be a serious problem. It takes about 3 days for 1 dose to clear, and if you have a patient who finds our they are allergic to azithromycin, they will remain "exposed" for about 3 days. This is unfortunate for those with mild allergies, but it is a serious threat to those with a more severe allergic response.
