Read for Greatness!
image002This week the Zimbabwe International Bookfair 2012 roared into
action. There is a busy programme to cover every one with an interest in
books. There are book launches, readings, sessions for writers, workshops
and activities for every reader and book trader. Today, I would like to
dedicate this installment to man's best friend - the book.
He who does not
He who does not read has got no advantage over he who cannot read. Reading
opens the mind and allows it to travel to places that are beyond imagination
and ferments ideas that the writer never imagined possible. There is this
thing that cannot be described that only a book can do to the mind. It
stimulates, entertains, enlightens and informs. He who does not read does
not know what he is missing and what he is missing is a lot. Books transmit
thoughts, ideas, culture, experiences and knowledge. They preserve
knowledge, insights, myth, mystery and folklore. They are a spectacle to the
world of the writer and a repository of both folly and wisdom, progress and
vanity. Books are an abstraction of structured thought streams.
Give a book
We all love giving and receiving gifts. Without exception books make some of
the best presents there are. Books come in all shapes, formats, sizes and
subjects. When giving a book, be clear about the interests of the recipient.
If the recipient loves birds, there are some good bird books you can give
them. If the person loves prayer, there are books like, Prayer Rain that are
a life time blessing to receive. If they love history and current affairs
there are also many other books that are in keeping with the varied tastes
of readers. In find books by Galago Publishers interesting and stimulating.
Biographies, well written, are an enjoyable read.
Influence through books
Many people have shared testimonies of the impact that books have had on
them. In 2006, my late wife, Esther, passed on and it was such a blow to me
and my family. A few weeks later a friend in Canada sent me a little book,
"The Greatest Salesman" by Og Mandino. For a few days I just stared at the
book, wondering why a friend would send me a sales book instead of a
"comfort in bereavement book?" Then one late evening I decided to just thump
through the book. The first few pages were a convoluted ancient tale of some
salesman who was trying to make a living and breakthrough to greatness. It
is when I got to the scrolls that it felt as though I had struck oil or a
rich gold belt. Each of the scrolls were like a powerful gem or adrenalin
injection. I underlined almost every word. At that moment I was eternally
grateful for having received such powerful book. Thank you Percy!
The next day, I took the book to the office and I started sharing the
message of the book with my team. I also started sharing the message of the
book in my workshops. We ordered the book in Innov8 Bookshops. I carried the
book with me everywhere I went. I was electrified. Books have that magic and
igniting effect. What book has touched you and inspired you lately?
Read Out!
One of the greatest habits we can develop is to read out aloud. The best
time to start is as early as possible. Pregnant mothers should start reading
out books to their unborn children. To help build the reading culture, there
are bath books for little bambinos. As they grow, we can read them more and
better books. Reading should be a lifetime journey, not a scholastic
pilgrimage.
Reading out books should not just be confined to children. Teams could read
books together. Couples could also read out book passages to each other. One
of the greatest practices that should be preserved in schools and in the
Christian Churches is the public reading of the Bible. There is something
powerful in the public recital of the written word. Perhaps this is why some
of the best speeches are read out not just potted out.
Mark what you read
We do not read books as they are but as we are. I have several books that I
have read a number of times. Each time I read the book, I seem to get some
insights that I never got before. It is not that the book has changed, but I
have changed each time I read the book. Indeed in reading you never cross
the same river more than once.
To preserve the insights you get when reading, I recommend marking the
sections that catch your attention (unless you borrowed the book!). Some
people prefer to use a highlighter or a set of highlighters, with each
colour indicating a particular subject topic. Some people prefer to simply
underline using a pen or pencil. Some people prefer to put some
"stikinotes". Whatever your style, choose what works for you.
Review and share thoughts
Ideas like anything good are best shared to be fanned up and kept alive.
Great books are best shared and one of the best ways of sharing good books
and ideas is through book reviews. The internet age has made this easy.
Websites like Shelfari are great places to interact with other book lovers
and to discuss books and review them. Book lovers seem to always find other
book lovers, it is a kind of fellowship. Twitter is also another powerful
tool that could used. Twitter is easy to use and fast. It also allows you to
interact with favourite authors and share ideas, thoughts and insights. It
allows you to have your say easily and quickly in just 140 characters at a
time. Facebook, LinkedIn and Pinterest also present opportunities to share
with other people that love similar books or subjects. Pinterest allows you
to "pin" your favourite books under your profile.
Read daily
Book reading should never be a long holiday ritual, indulged in when all
your friends are away and you are home alone. It is best done daily. Let
your reading flow with the pattern and rhythm of your life. If you are an
early riser, read before dawn. Start your day with a good book. If you have
stable lunch breaks, take some thirty minutes to read before resuming work.
If you are a night owl, read into the night. Some people find that reading
before going to bed is always calming. Tablets are making reading even
easier, but the charisma of a good old fashioned book with pig ears can
never be erased in a generation.
Turn the TV down and turn reading up, this is a great way to grow into
greatness. Why wait, grab a book and start reading. Visit a good bookshop,
pick two or three books and start reading.
