Hi guys,
What is the state of "holistic" dentistry in the US right now? I'm from Canada so I have no clue. Is it big? Small? The next big thing? Witchcraft?
There is one guy here who is doing it...he is pretty old but is taking one last stab at it. Million dollar clinic with "purified" air, "filtered" water system in all ops, CEREC because CEREC is "the most biologically compatible material"...latex-free, fluoride free, amalgam free. Does some dental work without anesthesia because anesthetic needs to be detoxified, etc.
I have studied this from afar and honestly, all I can see is, it's kind of a scam to make money.
EVERYTHING seems to be a CEREC under the auspices of being biocompatible, but what I think this really means is, only small occlusals and buccals are direct composite. EVERYTHING ELSE is a porcelain inlay/onlay which means that the fees for everything else are all "crown" fees...no indirects. It turns a four tooth, all first molar, MOB treatment plan for, I dunno, $1400, $1500 into a "four indirect CEREC restorations" for $4700 or something like that. Am I missing something? Seems to be a cash grab to me, nothing else.
Many of the patients there, as I understand it, are cancer survivors, chronic medical problem people, mentally kinda "out there" people. But regardless - if they are staying there - they pay the big fees.
Cone beam imaging there too - odd if they are not placing their own implants or doing lotsa surgery. Seems again to be a high diagnostic charge for...nothing.
Patients have ZOE's placed if it is getting painful to drill without anesthesia (kids anyways as I understand it). I guess they wait 6 months, excavate and try again. HEY isn't ZOE CYTOTOXIC? What is it doing in the holistic clinic?
Just wondering what all you guys think.
We haven't placed amalgams in 12 years. We do have latex free gloves and dams but only as the situation warrants. We still use flouride, but mostly since the alternatives like MI paste are so bloody expensive, nobody would eant them anyways.
Comments, please.
