It's almost that time of year again, where every ghost, witch, Angry Bird, Batman, zombie and fairytale princess will come knocking on our doors for candy (aka, one of the holidays that keeps us in business ;). It's also a time where many dentists turn this into an opportunity to reach out to help kids and our troops deployed overseas.

This will be the first year for ACE Member, Dr. Lori Cockley of East Berlin, PA. She and her team have put the word out through their patient email network (Smile Reminders) and through their Facebook page and to all of the kids who came to Kids' Day last week. Also, a patient who writes a weekly column in the local paper did a story. They will do another email blast next week when it gets closer to Halloween.

They have registered online with Operation Gratitude who will put together approximately 60,000 care packages for the troops. Lori's office is planning to collect unopened candy from the community children and pay them $1 per pound (up to 5 lbs) and are asking the children to bring a letter or card of thanks for the troops to send along with the candy. She has some $2 bills and dollar coins to pay the kids just for the novelty of it. They also have Xylitol lollipops taped to a card printed with info about the benefits of Xylitol and an office promo to hand out.

Their responsibility is to sort the candy and ship to Operation Gratitude in California. www.halloweencandybuyback.com

"We are keeping our fingers crossed that it all goes smoothly but I am sure it will be a lot of fun. I'm hoping to get lots of good feedback and photos for Facebook and our website." Lori says.

ACE BoardMember, Dr. Walter Kostrzewski of Milford, CT, will be collecting candy for the 6th year through the same program. He also gives $1/lb and also gives them a toothbrush kit from his office and includes coupons for Free Whitening, Free Exam and consult. The candy is then sent to Operation Gratitude with Dental Care Kits for the troops as well.

"It's a WIN-WIN-WIN for all involved. We usually collect 1,000 pounds of candy every year and expect to do the same this year", says Walter.
