Re: [MTC Global] Student feedback-Yard stick of faculty performance?

Dear All,
The main components of teacher  performance assessment are -Attitude, Skill and Knowledge (ASK). These days the educational institutes have also started following 360 degree appraisal system. The major component of attitude of a teacher may be taken and assessed from student feedback if student feedback proforma is carefully designed.
The biased attitude of students continue to remain with select students who believe in short cuts and unethical means. If attendance criteria  for example only students with 75% or above attendance allowed to give feed back. This may reduce the positivity as well the negativity to certain extent.
In the appraisal system, the subjective element will always remain but with the carefully designed proforma more emphasis could be given to objectivity. There is also a  need to do rating of Initiating officers ( HOD/Director) to the extent from Strict to Liberal).
Skill could be checked by way of Course file, Digital contents, Teaching plans and adherence to plans etc . As far knowledge is concerned , normally the faculty is thoroughly grilled at the time of initial interview. How ever the enhancement of knowledge may be viewed based on their contribution to journals, books and conferences etc.
I personally feel that student feed back can provide valuable results if conducted  in the right spirit with carefully designed proforma. It is also suggested that as far as possible the student feed back to be conducted on line.
   Regards.

Hai,

In a politicaly charged or motivated or biased or inclined or affiliated students in the university campuses of kerala, the student evaluating teachers for that matter  anything will be a nightmare for teachers!
Let us have a peer group evaluation instead, which is for self appraisal!

Dear all, Student feedback is one of the important indicators of faculty performance, however, one definitely can not rely  only on  student feedback for evaluation of faculty performance.  I agree that most indians find it difficult to be absolutely fair and objective in their assessment of personalities without being unduly influenced by  extraneous factors or personal  liking or disliking. This has been one of the obstacles in effective implementation of  360 degree feedback process. However, it can be properly  dovetailed as part of the overall system and process of evaluation to take advantage of the instrument.  The feedback of old students can also be added as it may be more reliable than current ones, for they will not be influenced by immediate concerns of fear or favour.  Regards, Dr R P Singh

 performance?

A feedback form needs careful thought.
First it has to be well thought through.Open ended questions as against close ended ,on a scale of 1-10 etc make a difference
Second,is the student put through say a feedback training program. As a whole it is believed Indians are not good at feedback.
Also   do we want development feedback or motivational ?
Interesting though to think through this.....

 Dear All,

Traditionally student feedback and exam results been considered major yardsticks of the performance and effectiveness of faculty members by the leadership of various colleges/institutes/organizations. However, lately this issue is being debated widely because of the loopholes and errors in the student feedback process. It's observed that in several cases, student's give faulty feedback owing to strictness/discipline being imposed by faculty etc. The students may even wrongly favor a faculty for being friendly and lenient .In some cases the student undergo undue influence to negatively/positively incline towards a faculty etc. Apart from this, even management may use this as a tool to support their decisions in select cases,  Solicit your views, experiences and opinions on the same.
