RE: Re: [MTC Global] Excellence is Missing in B-Schools

Hence, can we surmise that teacher’s real test is really not producing good quality finished product out of good raw material as is in case of top level institutions in the country but real test lies in producing excellent leaders and entrepreneurs from tier II and tier III schools. Secondly teachers’ complaint that they are not getting good quality students hence they cannot produce good quality business leaders is not justified?

Can we also say that not necessarily all the teachers of IIMs and such institutions are excellent teachers as reflected by the results of their students?

Goelsaheb, as for the first question,  I believe, if the best brains dedicate themselves to bringing out the best  from  Tier III students, they can certainly produce results.

As for the second question, the performance may or may not suffer...

Best wishes for 2013.

I have a hypothetical question. Can the best brains of Tier I institutions produce results if they are given Tier III students instead of Tier I students.

On the other hand if Tier I students are taught by a tier III teacher, will their performance will necessarily be poor.

If the scores of CAT, MAT, RAT, D-MAT and what all Tests are the standards to go by for admissions....they are nothing but window dressing as Prof.Dutta has rightly observed. Yes, IIM's, XLRI and other Premier Tier - I Institutions follow this up with strict P.I. wherein the gauge the potential of the candidate as majority of the applicants are from good English Medium finishing Schools, following it up with Graduation, the communication skills would definitely not be a standard to judge them and these Tier - I institutes know it only too well. They quizz the student on his ambition, aspiration and analyze if he has the potential to make the mark ( they know well the paying capacity of the candidate). So that is the Quality analysis. And these Institute's have the best brains in teaching ( no disrespect meant to other teaching faculties in other Institutes ) and they have a pedagogy of teaching built up over years of experiments and experience and case studies and presentations form a daily routine for students to hone their skills and make them perfect. So Quality is perfected and polished

There would be heavy competition among the bright lot with each one wanting to be perfect and such competition makes everybody race and take a potshot to be the topper. But after that What...? One guy/girl will be the topper and rest then settle to work for corporate....some fall by the side and become entrepreneurs and struggle...others plod On. The race goes on....

Just as there is a hot race in gaining the edge in top education...they come out with a mindset to give quality....but the competition outside makes them compromise with quality...and their own experiments boomerang on them to make them realize that real life is different from the books....and they then have to adapt... to real life situation and demands.

Western Countries have private sector participation in Defence production....in India our political classes have realized that our countrymen cannot be trusted with such vital process which could fall into enemy hands so barring EME and BHEL, HAL and other Government Sector undertakings....where bureaucracy and red tapism finish any Ideas even before it germinates....we continue to import even Guns from the west to defend ourselves.

Our Youth can be compared to our Cricketers.....they perform and make their way into good Institutes and there the politics bogs them down....they loose direction and motivation...the stars become dull....exceptions are there...some struggle against heavy odds and outshine others and come up in life through sheer grit and performance...but those are limited in numbers and immediately on getting through with merits they grab an overseas job and say goodbye to the politics of frustration which could stunt their growth.

Among the Teachers too there is no dearth of Quality staffs...but their motivation is killed by non supportive management and though they come to the profession with good intent....the politics in the staff and groupism demotivates them and they lose their interest when faced with reality.

Changing the mindset then of both faculties and students is the biggest challenge of Management. But who will Train the Trainers?

Happy morning

It is my humble request to all the members of MTC global to suggest answers to the
following questions:

what is our attitude towards quality?
What is our awareness about quality?
How do we translate our intention of quality into reality?
When are we going to tell the world that Indians are as good as any other
developed country in producing quality?
Can we have any excuse even after independence to say that we are still a
developing country?
