The Roman Catholic Pope Benedict XVI is to resign on February 28th, according to reports on Italian news agency.

agency ANSA. Last year the Pope started using a cane on occasions and recently he appeared to have trouble reading the text of an address he delivered in Rome.

The Vatican has confirmed the resignation. A Vatican statement says Benedict's resignation effectively means the office of the Pope is vacant.
