Yea, I'm still better with kids that my younger colleagues but I simply have lost the patience and enjoy the artistic side much more...keeps me working.  Guy

Back when I started, I was really good with kids, in fact, set up my first office adjacent to a pediatrician's suite (he was my landlord).  As I discovered my artistic side, I got away from it.  My assistant of 6 years said, "I've never seen you work on a child before."

Great job and management steve.  And you can never, ever go wrong with cute, and she is cute as hell!  Can't remember the last time I saw a young lady who had recently been face planted, snapped off a central, and still had that rosy demeanor.

I got called in on an emergency last night.  Eight year old who'd never had a filling before.  She and her dad were roller skating and he somehow fell on top of her and planted her face into the wood floor.  It's 8:30 at night and we made a party out of the affair.  Took some before pictures and did a magic trick, then did the magic of numbing her without her feeling anything.

Did a pulpectomy, and then bonded the shard of enamel the dad had found right back into place.  During the process, the older sister said that Lacey was the focus of attention on some kid's version of twitter.  It seemed the accident happened at a Haddon Heights school social event at a roller rink.  We posted the after picture, with a shout out from the mom on our FB page (smile south jersey).  One of the things I'll always say in those instances is, "be sure to tell your friends and neighbors."

Even better if you bother to keep decent records on who they've already referred and talk about how much you enjoyed getting to know them.

If you are not paperless, the best spot for this in on the outside of the chart jacket alongside the major medical alerts.  It's THAT important.

Some practice mgt systems can be teased into tracking this info and setting it out for your morning huddle.

Yes, the less stiff you are, the more relaxed, the lighter you ask, the better, while still conveying your intent. "I absolutely love it when you send people my way, Irene!" It makes my day, and when I get my Rolls Royce, I am going to take you for a ride in it!

Whenever you hear a patient comment positively about their visit or treatment, I say something like this:  " I really appreciate you saying that.  We try very hard to do our best here and we sure would love to have more patients like you.  If you have any family or friends that need a great dentist, please send them our way."  Needs to be honest and eye to eye.  WS

What do all of you say or how do you ask patients for referrals? I've been told that I sound a bit rehearsed when asking. It would be nice to have several options so we can change the way we ask.

     Thanks,
