Okay, as moderator, let me say that there are good points on both sides, and arguing politics or religion is just a loser, capeesh? Please, let's not go there, okay?

Like Guy, I support a graduated income tax. The main reason is that we all have basic needs that we all have to pay for…housing, food, transportation, utilities, etc. the lower your income, the higher the percentage these basic needs take.  20% of someone making $30,000 hits a lot harder than 20% of $500,000. The wealthier person has a lot more wiggle room to control his expenses. In Birmingham, we pay 10% sales tax, on EVERYTHING…food, Rx, everything. Our property tax is obscenely low. As of a few years ago, the highest rate in Alabama would be the 75% of Mississippi!. A couple from NJ moved here several years ago and was told that Mt Brook had the highest property tax in all of Alabama. When they saw the yearly amount, they asked if that was per quarter!
An 8-10% sales tax hits very hard on someone making $20-30,000, coupled with a 5% state income tax. Now, take way the basic needs costs or housing, food and clothing, that doesn't leave much. Someone making $350,000 or more has a lot more room to  control their expenses.

Guy, thanks for the thoughtful response.  In order to keep my word I will only respond in answer to your question "How the heel do you know who I voted for?"

In another thread you said you would vote for whoever you thought was the best candidate.  And then went on to say that you had voted for Bush and now you voted for Obama.  I am not privy to anything beyond that.

And again.  Thanks for your response.  It does help me understand where you are coming from on this.

Regards,
Jeff

Although you are quite welcome to do it you can not compare commercial/commerce with taxation.  #2 How the hell do you know who I voted for?  My son and I were looking at the tax increases for someone who makes 400k a year over someone who makes 200k a year.  Even that is a bit ludicrous being 200k puts you in the top 2% of the incomes in the US.

I've always found it ironic looking at my friends who make way over 400k a year bitching way more than the college professor like my son who makes 90k a year and works his ass off.  What happens to people when they get into the super rich range.  Do they go totally brain dead and suddenly feel like they need to take up arms to protect their money.  Crap, I was in the 37% range and proud of it.  Hell, I wish I'd been in the 39% range but didn't make it.

Jeff, it is simple fact that in all civilizations that have had some success in history, those who had took care of those who didn't.  When that stopped the civilization went into the shitter.  Look at Rome.  As long as they had a functional parliament they fed the poor and made sure all citizens had access to a life style that was at least sustaining.  When the rulers dissolved a representative government it was crash and burn.

I marvel at how the rich are now living in a world of paranoia.  THEY WANT TO TAKE OUR MONEY, GUNS, RIGHTS.  What has happened to this damned country?  We used to care.  Now it is about hoarding and worrying about someone taking things we don't need and actually taxing the rich more than the poor.  God in Heaven, why in hell should I not be taxed in a higher bracket than my son, who is up here busting his ass, has house to pay for, cars, and children to educate.  I'm totally debt free, made 250k dollars last year and I damned well should pay more taxes.

Let's look at it another way.  Why should those making over half a million pay more than those like my son who has a honorable profession as a college professor but only makes 90k?  Why?  Why do you think the US Government is going to take your guns?  Why?  It is a miserable life of paranoia and fear and anger. Hell, there is a tint of anger in this post to me...a bit of lunacy there.  I'm not taking your damned money.  I don't want your guns or the 12k rounds of ammunition you spent your money on.  My son could not afford to spend that much on ammunition but he's supposed to pay the same taxes someone living in another world making four times what he is?

I don't think Rick and I are the only ones on here that see the tea pot conservatives as lunatics.  I know Republican friends in congress and the state legislature who view them as lunatics.  Yea, you are damned right.  You and I should pay more taxes than my son.  And this is taxation which has no relationship at all to gouging which is becoming more and more common in our profession.  If Pankey really said charge all they can afford to pay then I want nothing to do with Pankey or anything they do.  I'll put them in there with Scientology.  Respectfully, Guy

Hey Guy.  I won't pursue this and am really just interested in your answer for curiosity's sake.  You note that this sort of behavior is totally unethical and proudly report that a business in your town was shut down because of it.  Yet in other threads you proudly note that you voted for a guy who's central political strategy was to charge more to people who make more.  I am just wondering how you reconcile that.

Again…no bashing.  i won't even follow-up with more questions or make another post on the thread.  I just really want to know how you work that out.

When tobacco was king, all of the buyers would come down from NC (different season and different tobacco) and stay for three months in local motels.  The guys driving the BMWs, Mercedes, big Caddy's got charged thirty percent more.  Some guys came down in regulars Chevys or Fords that outranked the big car drivers.  There was a huge window where you checked in and the owner could see the entire drive through and parking lot.  He often left a flunky there but with the order of special fees for big cars.  These were sharp cookies and they all joined the country club when they came and drank and talked together.  They complained to the attorney general about gouging and the motel lost its Holiday Inn franchise and got the crap fined out of them.  Someone built a big Shoney's on the other side of town and all the tobacco guys moved there.

I guess you can charge someone anything you want.  I'm disappointed in Pankey making that statement, which I've heard before, when the Pankey Institute is supposed to be about honesty and ethical behavior.  That sure as hell is not ethical.  I'm going to ask my Pankey Fellow brother about that.  Guy
