Re: Fwd: [MTC Global] VC Post on Sale: Varsity Member

I feel that problem has increased with the top academics posts being given to bureaucrats instead of academicians.

Since VC post in many of the universities is being allocated to favourite bureaucrats as their post retirement benefits, such VCs with no experience of academics simply run the universities like any other government department, which is full of nepotism, red tapism and off course corruption.

Dr.Sumesh Raizada

Dear All,

Y/day , in a seminar at Hyd, a former UGC Chairman ( who is widely respected in Academic circles) mentioned that some time back, he mooted a proposal for preparation of a panel / roster of Sr Academic leaders across the country so that VCs for Govt Universities can be selected , as and when needed . He lamented that it was scuttled by fellow Academicians ,lobbying with Politicians.

Dear All
With all the scams, it is very clear if you want to succeed you need MONEY, MONEY AND MONEY. Everything else is secondary. It is pitiable that such things happen even in the education sector.
Having said this, I have a question to all of us,
We are excellent in discussing, threadbaring and lamenting that such a thing is happening etc
Does Prof. Xavier or Prof Richard Hay or any of the senior professors have an idea as to how to curb this?
Please do not come and say that the UGC should do this or the Government should do this etc.For the UGC or the Governments, this is the lowest priority area. It is extremely difficult to even identify with concrete evidence such happenings leave alone nailing the culprits.
There is a systemic failure all round. We are good at crying but let me ask all of us HOW MANY OF US GO OUT THERE AND VOTE DURING THE ELECTIONS. THIS IS THE STARTING POINT FOR CHANGE.  We do not even bother to exercise our democratic rights but would like to be arm chair lamenters
thanks
Prof. Dr. R. Gopal

In good olden days V C 'S were intellectuals and ace administrators who needed no introduction at least in his own state. Now, we have to  find how the present incumbent got that post! In some states,  either you have to be an yes man of a political party or of a communal party.Govt.s are always eager to change them when they come to power, for convenience sake. If the person is a pure academic, nevertheless , he may run into trouble as he will not be backed by anybody. So, some might pay, others use political connections and some others get it for a song-the lucky ones.

When corruption is flowing in our blood , just talking corruption in education is not sufficient. It is there in all  spheres of life.  We seem to be helpless against the political and bureaucratic nexus.

I endorse the views of Prof Xavier and it is time that there is an autonomous body which pools in the data bank of Professors who wish to be considered for the VC post across the country irrespective of the location. This was suggested by the Yashpal committee and now we have a situation where by state governments can decide on the VC selection norms ( Earlier only those with 10 years Professor experience were considered).

We only used to hear rumours.  Now the cat is out of the bag.
Students pay capitation fee to get admission. Teachers bribe Vice Chancellors to get a job. VCs bribe politicians to get the coveted posts. Should colleges bribe HR managers to find jobs for their students?
Where are we headed? Is there a future for those who do not want to pay bribes and those who cannot afford the speed money?

It is a general perception that VC Post is a political one and one needs to fund / pay money for the Post. Perception seems to be true as reported in News Paper.
