Watching the Penquins game yesterday, and seeing Sid Crosby get smacked in the mouth with the puck just really upsets me.
WHY..WHY does the NHL NOT require face shields for EVERYone??
I read the article about his injury and it stated he lost 'several teeth' and required 'jaw surgery' and he'll be out for a while.
I don't understand this. Life isn't all about the sports. It's SO unimportant as compared to all the other things about life that make the short-lived time in professional sports pale in comparison to what happens afterwards. Many of us have had or have former NHL players as patients. ALL of them are permanently maimed for life from fights, getting hit by sticks, the puck, whatever. ALL of them have had broken noses..They're teeth are all boogered up. But they don't seem to care about life after hockey.
I don't 'feel' for those who don't wear protection. Face shields are there for catchers, goalies, football players, etc. WHY NOT for hockey players?
The ones who get hit I feel are just plain stupid..Yea, I said it, you're STUPID if you play hockey and put your self at such a risk to have your face and mouth deformed just because you can't or don't want to wear something to protect yourself. They wear helmets?! WHY NOT FACE SHIELDS?
You know what it's going to take?
DEATH!
I was at a shooting thing at Front Sight in Nevada last week, and they said to put a bullet in the ocular cavity is better than one to the forehead.
SOMEday, someone is going to get hit squarely in the eyes/nose, and they're going to DIE in front of thousands/millions of people..and MAYBE THEN, the NHL will make face shields a mandatory item.
Until then, we are going to watch this sport slowly wack away at it's participants faces, until that day that the ocular cavity will meet an errant hockey puck, and someone will die because of it.
I'm so sad for hockey today..it's one step closer to someone losing much more than part of their jaw and some teeth.
Ray
