Job Title

Linux admin

Project Location

Carlsbad, CA

Duration

6 months

Interview Mode : Phone and Skype

Skills Required and Job Description:

  1. Ability to demonstrate the following:
    1. How to configure bind from scratch, configuration files involved, how DNS works, the path what protocols it uses, and common record types in DNS.
    2. How authentication works on linux, what file controls the authentication, and path for types of authentication (pam.conf, nsswitch.conf, etc)
    3. How to configure a RedHat and/or Linux based Cluster, and have them be able to explain how they fence each other from a network perspective and what types of things can be done to increase thresholds on that fencing.

                                                               i.      Make sure they know what fencing is

ii.      Make sure they are able to describe a few different cluster technologies, and why one is more appropriate than another.

  1. They should know where common configuration files are:

                                                               i.      Interface configuration & log files

                                                             ii.      /etc/resolv.conf

iii.      /etc/ssh/sshd_conf.conf  (or is it just sshd_conf)

                                                           iv.      /var/log/messages

                                                             v.      /etc/fstab

  1. Experience with Bind, Open LDAP, Apache and Tomcat.
  2. They should be able to explain how to troubleshoot performance issues, and they should be able to give you these tools to do it:

                                                               i.      top

                                                             ii.      iostat

                                                            iii.      sar

                                                           iv.      dmesg

                                                             v.      /var/log/messages

vi.      Not just list those off, but explain in which situation you'd want to use which tools and why.  I wouldn't even tell them the tool names unless you are really fishing for an answer.

  1. Have them describe how they'd configure a linux server from scratch, and be able to tell you what would be required in a requirements document for them to properly do that.  The description should indicate that they need IP, Mask, Gateway, DNS, Storage Requirements, RAM, CPU, Network interface counts, availability etc.
  2. Ideally they'd reference Kickstart or some version of remote deployment, If they don't, then ask them how they'd setup 15 systems that all need to be configured very similarly on physical hardware, and on Virtual hardware.
  3. Ask them what Virtual enviornments they've worked in and in what capacity?

                                                               i.      We're looking for someone that knows there way around in VMware, understands how to edit a VM and provision more storage, CPU, RAM.

ii.      Understands how to clone a VM or that cloning is an option.

iii.      Understands that templates are created and you can provision from them.

  1. Ask them about LVM and provisioning storage on a Linux sytem.  They should be able to tell you how to provision a presented disk from scratch.

                                                               i.      I.e. pvcreate, vgcreate, lvcreate, ext2fs commands etc.

  1. Ask them about SANs, Storage and Multipathing. They should have a very good understanding of those components from a server perspective rather than from the storage/switch side, that isn't needed, but doesn't hurt.
  2. Networking and Security should also be something they are familiar with, they should understand and be able to describe how to do the following:

                                                               i.      How to secure/ harden a server, can they tell you "iptables" or "host based firewall", if you asked them what are some of the types of network restrictions you can do with a host based firewall or iptables, they should say lock down ports, lock down ports to specific IPs, allow port ranges, allow all ports to certain IP addresses.

ii.      They should indicate that shutting down unneeded services is also a good way to harden a system.

iii.      Run everything in SSH/SSL rather then RSH/HTTP
