Rick,
Start with a trainer. They will push you, especially toward the end of your workout period, and extend your endurance. If after a few months you are satisfied, keep doing the workouts without the trainer. The other good part of working out with a trainer is that you will be less likely to injure yourself and set yourself back in your workouts.
For the last 17 months I have been working out with a former Clippers trainer (I still can’t dunk however!). I lost 25 lbs. and about 3-4 inches around the waist. We workout 2-3 times per week, for 1 ½ to 2 hours. I then workout once on the weekend on my own. I love the fact that I can talk with someone too, while still working out hard.
