I feel that the topic is losing its direction. Nobody says that only industry experience people can be good teachers. Nobody says that teachers not having industrial experience are not good teachers. Nobody denies the importance of our teachers in our school or undergraduate days. The simple point of discussion is that when we say that management education has to send out industry ready individuals, it is essential that contemporary issues facing the industry are brought to the class rooms and there can be any number of ways to do so – individuals having passion for teaching can come in the field, teachers can take a sabbatical from the academics and join industry for a year or two, teachers can generate survey, study, training, consultancy assignments with the Industry that will keep them updated with current reality of industry, industry professionals and entrepreneurs can be invited to interact with faculty members and students separately to get their inputs etc. etc. It is that simple.

I remember my School days that after passing 10th CBSE Board exam my father who is a Civil engineer told me to opt science or Maths for next learning’s, I was more inclined towards commerce field and I chose it for my future, I can still remember the common perception sailing in most of the mind regarding superiority of maths & Science over Commerce or Management field.

We were low viewed students in comparison to future Doctor’s & Engineers….. 

Coming to the main topic of Industry Academia gap, I would like to ask a question from all my esteemed MTCians.

·         How many of us have studied from Industry experienced person during our School days or for the matter of fact during under graduation?

 

I believe most of us have build our foundation from those school masters who have taught us all the  basic fundamentals along with changing updates and I hope many of the MTCians might have entered in IIT’S , IIM’S & Industry  due to these  school masters. 

·         So have we failed because we never build our foundation by gaining knowledge through industry person?

Now coming to the Academic field as a Career, It has been always neglected as a career choice by most of the young, passionate people and if an individual tries to enter in the field then he has to face lots of criticism from lots of people around. 

·         Why the Gap Exist?

Industry experience can’t be alone treated as the gap filler or a final solution, of course I agree  that these people have lot  to share in classroom but others without  industry experience are not responsible for creating such a gap.

The reasons can be as follow

1.      Lack of interest in Teaching as a Career( Most of them treat it as a side option)

2.      Lack of interest in research work ( People are interested in gaining free PhD)

3.      Mass admission policy for profit earning without scanning the candidate profile.

4.      Lack of basic facility for teaching resource development in most of the institutes.

 

At last I would  like to share an experience which I had by working with one of the Esteemed Professor, Dr. JC Varshney who is having more than 100 books to his credit in the field of Commerce, Accounts and Management. I was overwhelmed, felt proud to work with such a personality whose book I used to read during my B.Com days. Such a humble and kind personality who changed many lives through his immense knowledge by dedicating his whole life in teaching field.

We are not Gap creators but we are Learners & Educators.

Industry Experience is not at all a bad idea but it does not guarantee the improvised version of Faculty. I have seen many faculties having industry experience but they lack behind teaching skills..
I believe teaching is an art which is fine tuned with end no.of case studies and research and its not restricted only to industry people.
We can find example of many professor who have dedicated their whole life for this noble cause.
The Gap starts when teaching is taken for granted by Employer who is just concentrated towards high profit through mass admission, low recruitment profile by paying less money to teaching resources.
Its also the mistake of most of the employee who joins the teaching career for the sake of job and never do justice with this esteemed career.
I believe its not the industry experience which is required, its all the right attitude which is required by all the stakeholders involved in education process whether its a faculty, employer, students, parent's or an industry person.

One of my Colleagues tells me ' In Academics, you should have more qualification like 2-3 Ph.D.s, 2-3 MBAs, 2-4 M.A. etc and you can easily get very good Salary. Do not bother about Knowledge much as no one is interested in that.'---- It is true in most of the places. People may disagree but it is the fact.
