RE: [ACEsthetics] Angies List

Yes we can and we can make a very visible and solid difference in the community.  I had an example yesterday.  I probably pissed off the senior partner but this was about a kid in pain.  The patient belonged to the younger partner who had an endo at eight.  I had an two endos with a bridge at eight so they put him with the senior partner.  Now this kid is a member of second largest farming family in the county and running the operation at 30.  But yesterday morning he was just scared.  The radiograph was obvious…old endo, over prepped canals with possible strip perfs and at least two furcal perfs with large lesion.  The tooth was so sore he begged them not to touch it.  Senior put him in the chair, hygienist (who was a friend of the kid) had already taken the radiograph.  The kid was told that he had a massive sinus infection and given a script for antibiotics and pain meds and told him they could pull the tooth only, which he did not want, and sent him home.

Naturally the assistant and hygienist grabbed me and showed me the radiograph and asked what was wrong.  I told them and that I could have gotten him out of pain.  The only way I get a new patient is for the patient to explicitly request me so I told them to have him call me back after lunch and specifically request me…he did it before lunch and he was in the chair.  When I got in the junior partner already had him in the chair doing anesthesia because this grown man was in tears with pain.  My junior partner is my anesthesia go to man…he’s a champ so the kid was deader than an anvil when I started to work.  I had another endo and four unit bridge in the other room but just found orifices and actually found one of the perfs with the endo probe.  I got most of the gutta percha out of the canals and opened the perfs which were causing the lesion.  Put formocresol on a squeezed cotton pledget, and closed with amalgam.  Went to work on my other patient twenty minutes late but easy to catch up.

Called him last night and he was one happy kid.  It was a little sore like I had told it to expect but zero pain after massive pain for three days.  I think our senior partner is going into a depression.  He knew what was wrong with this guy but simply skipped over it.  He knew I could have gotten him out of pain but he didn’t even speak to me about him.  The assistant and hygienist knew I was the best shot with endo to get him out and simply went past their duty and told me.

The young man asked if he could stay with me and I told him know that he would have to stay with the junior partner who was a damned good dentist and would have sent him to me that morning if he had seen me.  I’d handle anything like that after we fixed it because that was the way his dentist worked.  I get his dentist to come in and numb for me sometimes.  I had him happy about his dentist before we got through talking but he was happy with us.  He’ll never forget the senior partner, who simply blows my mind…send someone out of here in pain when it could have been stopped.  He is alienating more and more patients with this lack of treatment.  I think he should try to sell his half and get out of dentistry or go to ortho school if he can find a slot.  Hell, if he could find a buyer I’d get him a slot somewhere in ortho.

Can't do much about that, except to behave in a manner that nobody thinks of "us" as anything like "those guys"!

You might want to read Seth Godin's new book, "The Icarius Deception" which is  about how we are seeing the end of the industrial age, and the beginning of a connected, information rich age. The end result of the industrial age is almost predictable- where you can get mass produced things cheaper and more easily, and how tomorrow's successes will be businesses and people who are unique, trusted, able to be creative in words and actions. Really interesting to think about. I recommend it highly.
