RE: [ACEsthetics] Reuse of Endo Files

Gary and all ... I don't use smaller files more than once; however, if they are larger files, they have a certain protocol for cleaning and sterilizing plus marking so that we know when we've used them 3 times.  I haven't had a known problem yet. 
BTW, I would like further information on the Coltene files.  I assume that they are on their website.

Ken is correct, although disinfection is not an issue if autoclaving after cleaning is used.  I lecture for coltene and their Hyflex files, which because of their unique metallurgy are probably the most fracture resistant files available, and the reps often use reuse as a marketing point.  They weren't happy when I pointed out a legal disclaimer on the box that recommends single use.  What can is doing is what I tell folks from the podium, but I do recognize many use them multiple times.
 
Average file I believe is used 5 times.

It's fine until one breaks.  Then you will wish that you threw them out.  I throw them out after each patient as well.

I typically dispose of my endo files (both hand and rotary) after a single use (or single patient if multiple roots or teeth).  One of my classmates chided me for being wasteful and stated that he reuses his for 2-3 patients unless one gets overused and becomes dull.  I know the risk of breakage with multiple uses, but what about sterilization?  I don't think it would be a problem (no more so that any other instrument we dip into the cesspool that is the oral cavity), but wanted to check on the knowledge and practices of you people.
