Re: [MTC Global] Corporate Lesson: The Washerman, Dog and Donkey

Both the stories are riveting. It is a question of how we see ourselves. My perspective on this slightly different.

I treat myself as a Company and always find out ways to maximize my income and returns and incidentally the paymaster may be one of those companies whom I work for. ( in short I fancy myself as a Karma veeran - whose job is to ensure that the work gets done perfectly well ).

irrespective of the fact whether I am a donkey or a dog, I look at adding value and creating more invincibility to my work and myself. I have found in my 30 years of career I had always been on a growth mode and had managed to beat the downturns more successfully than any one else and in the process had always been ahead of the change and ready to receive any new things in life. Obviously if we think our current jobs had to be fully compensated then we will find ourselves in a deep hole and we will have no one else other than us to blame with such wrong notions / ideas.

Many Stories which are relevant for elders to tickle their grey cells and having a Moral in the end are quite often floated by people who have a strong desire to share their experience with the hope that others won't commit the same mistake as they did. Humans have a tendency to experiment and experience things bypassing rational thinking and thought process at times...if the experiment is successful....they are termed as Risk Takers....People who love challenges....but if it fails....you may be thrown out and either continue your quest in more experiments elsewhere or just give up the risk taking habit.... I started my career in Central Govt. job in Mumbai....initially we had a new project in the Ministry of Textiles where I had joined as Junior Investigator and within 6 months I had cleared the internal test and jumped to a Field Officer designate....the project for AEPC ( Apparel Export Promotion Council ) took me from Mumbai to Delhi ( 1989 ) & I was enjoying the challenges bringing in innovations but once this project ended and we were back to our Regional Offices doing mundane data collection work....I lost interest....I could see that promotions would only be possible looking at years of contribution and not the quality....so I quit....and came into Private Sector....Methodex Systems was my assignment & I was handling the Banking Sector....a good competitive work environment kept me engrossed for just 6 months and then I moved into Business in Audio Sales ( Music was my first Love ).... and from there I moved into Music Companies with Head Offices in Mumbai handling Gujarat Market...and finally switched to Music Merchandising. As Manager - Merchandising in Music World Entertainment Lted ( RPG ) I realized that with digital radio frequencies being allotted...it wouldn't be long before Music dies...I quit and came to Delhi to join my cousin in setting up a fabric trading business ( I didn't know even A,B, C of fabrics ) but in a couple of months I could sit across a fabric merchandiser and show him the collection of denims, dobbies, plain dobbies, twills & chords...besides the silks variety in fabrics. But the dragon .... China was fierce and we couldn't match their throw away pricings...I moved into handling a Carper Designing center ( for a principal in Riyadh - Saudi Arabia ).... as the center head I had to motivate my team of 5 designers to get best output from them. From there I moved onto handling the Resource Unit of a National level NGO.... the work was richly satisfying as I could see that I am able to influence positively young confused minds....however my thoughts and my ideas didn't impress the founder whose ideas though outdated was dear to him as it was a time tested formula....he however could not fathom the winds of changes which were blowing all around...from the NGO sector I made my final switch to Management Institute in Placements and for last 7 yrs...this has been my working field.
I came across many Donkeys....and a lot of lazy dogs in almost all the sectors where I had the previlege to work... there are areas where innovations pay rich dividends ( especially when you are doing it for yourself and can't afford to make mistakes ) and there have been cases where you need to compromise and do what management wants despite knowing that the result would be a failure for which you would be held responsible.I came across many confused youngsters who even at the age of 24+ are unable to find their focus...or career aspirations in life. I always did what pleased me and the moment I felt the field becoming murky...I would switch off after giving a piece of mind. The good old saying : Make your Interest your Career and you will never have to work.
But for this too we need to identify our interest.....and then find ways and means to make it our career. The struggle for survival in Management institute's too where politics has crept in making it ugly not just for faculties but the game also poisons the minds of youngsters who naturally enjoy playing the game at the cost of one of the faculty who would lose the interest and opt out.

Good story with old version…

There was once a washer man who had a donkey and a dog.

One night when the whole world was sleeping, a thief broke into the house, the washer man was fast asleep but the donkey and the dog were awake.

The dog decided not to bark since the master did not take good care of him and wanted to teach him a lesson.

The donkey got worried and said to the dog that if he doesn't bark, the donkey will have to do something himself. The dog did not change his mind and the donkey started braying loudly.

Hearing the donkey bray, the thief ran away, the master woke up and started beating the donkey for braying in the middle of the night for no reason.

Moral of the story " One must not engage in duties other than his own"

Now take a new look at the same story…

The washer man was a well educated man from a premier management institute.

He had the fundas of looking at the bigger picture and thinking out of the box. He was convinced that there must be some reason for the donkey to bray in the night.

He walked outside a little and did some fact finding, applied a bottom up approach, figured out from the ground realities that there was a thief who broke in and the donkey only wanted to alert him about it.

Looking at the donkey's extra initiative and going beyond the call of the duty, he rewarded him with lot of hay and other perks and became his favorite pet.

The dog's life didn't change much, except that now the donkey was more motivated in doing the dogs duties as well. In the annual appraisal the dog managed a " meets requirement" Soon the dog realized that the donkey is taking care of his duties and he can enjoy his life sleeping and lazing around.

The donkey was rated as "star performer". The donkey had to live up to his already high performance standards. Soon he was over burdened with work and always under pressure and now is looking for a job rotation…

If you have worked in a corporate environment, I am sure you have guessed the characters of the new story

Looking Forward for your Valuable Feedback About this Story.

WIth Regards,
Radha.
