Walt on my case, an oral surgeon at Emory examined one and found not arthritis of the joint.  I had been told this was possible.

Ray,

I would also consider osteoarthritis of the mandibular condylar head.  This is usually is demonstrated with a flattening of the condylar head as opposed to round and loss of posterior vertical dimension.  Show up very will on pans.   It is slowly progressive and requires constant reshaping of the posterior teeth.  I have run into this several times.
