Re: [MTC Global] Identifying Research Gaps: Whose Job It? If it is of Ph.D. aspirants, are they given enough time?

Respected Sirs/Madame

Greetings to all

It is sad to note that in many of the places whether you all believe it or not, even the guides are not much clear about what their wards intend to do. In some cases, they never show their interest to guide them sincerely. Many of them are keen in producing more Ph D holders under their guidance for the sake of availing the benefits what they would be getting it from the Universities.

I wish to place before you all that whoever does research leading to Ph D, the output or the findings of their research must have a significant contribution towards the society, nation, knowledge empowerment of all, government in formulating policies and not but the industries and business community at large.

Dear All,

Why scare is being created among PhD aspirants. We should motivate and guide aspirants to do PhD. Every University / Institution has its own procedures which the aspirant is to follow.

PhDs should focus on earning respect by enhancing the content, increasing knowledge base, serving the society and preparing the students for next generation.

Regards.

Wonderful! That is a good model! I rarely see this in the state universities; they ask for proposals (with hypotheses) right away at the time of enrollment.

Our University ( ICFAI University Jharkhand) gives one full semester( 5-6 months) ( after completion of course work and allocation of a Research Supervisor )
to do literature survey and submit Research Proposals. In case needed, they are given more  time, as selection of the right topic is crucial for successful completion of PhD.

A research proposal that is submitted to the University is to be presented by the scholar to the Research Board , who will thoroughly scrutinize it and
give feedback/suggestions to be incorporated in revised research proposal. A scholar is registered for PhD by our University only after the revised proposal is
accepted.

A Research scholar should identify the topic  in the area of his/her deep interest/passion after doing literature survey and finding out the gaps.
Unlike UG/PG programs, a research scholar must be prepared to work hard  and it is his responsibility to draw on the resources of the Research Supervisor extensively
( rather than expecting a cook book approach ,which will defeat the purpose of doing research) . Thanks to internet, there is no dearth of material
on research done on topics ( irrespective of discipline). Of course, Universities can create conducive ambience and  facilitate access to knowledge but it is up to the Research scholar - how to leverage it.

We find that the above works , not only in theory but also in practice...

Identifying Research Gaps: Whose Job It? If it is of Ph.D. aspirants, are they given enough time?

To get enrolled into Ph.D. programs, the aspirants should have a clear agenda on the objectives of research; identified research gaps turn into research objectives a.k.a. hypotheses. These will be incorporated into research proposal.

Universities can give hardly a month's time which is hardly enough to do literature review, identify the research gaps and crystallize the objectives. This means that aspirants should have already read enough for over a year or so before making a Ph.D. research proposal. If an aspirant is making a proposal in just 15 days, does such exercise reflect worthy research objectives? Ph.D. aspirants should have been working much before the enrolment process starts. This is the desirable scenario One.

Or else, university departments ( their professors-guides) should have already identified the research gaps to be assigned to the fresh Ph.D. candidates, as Prof. Prabhaka Woghedonker has mentioned in his article. Universities should publish the researchable areas so that the interested aspirants will take them up for their Ph.D. research. This is the desirable scenario Two.

But, are university professors and guides putting in enough time on this, given that they get a lot of non-academic work like evaluations etc.

How to see that these two scenarios prevail in our field?
