Well, my hiking days are over with. I just went to Savannah to a prosthetic
specialist who is going to fit me with a rigid plastic brace that will
mechanically fuse my ankle. It was determined that surgical fusion would be
a three year recovery period and I was at least functional now, we'd go with
the plastic brace. They took an impression of my lower leg. Interesting to
watch. They use a plastic mesh that they mold around your foot, ankle and
lower leg after wetting it. The use a plastic strip to retain a nice
rounded form at the front of the ankle to keep the material from crimping.
The cut it down the front right before it sets and close it back up to
harder completely. Can't be a lot wax technique but he said though CAD/CAM
companies are around this still is the gold standard. Stuff was like a hard
cast.

Seeley Lake is about an hour from Missoula. It is also in beautiful
country. If you are a climber, the Mission Mountains and the Swan Range are
just north of Seeley Lake - some rugged peaks. If you are interested, I can
recommend some cool hikes.
