Re: [MTC Global] Re: Travesty of truth

Dear MTCians

Greetings to one and all!

Let me share my personal experience, as I also have been interviewed on the same day July 24, 2013 by Dr U B Raju and Dr S Pratap Reddy

I entered their college campus at the dotted time 9.20 am. My interview time was at 9.30am with Dr UB Raju. Their campus and facilities are world class with residential accommodation for Students, Staff, and Guest Speakers.

Dr Raju welcomed me with pleasant greetings  and I was asked to accompany them for Breakfast.

My Session started at 9.45am and ended at 10.40 am.

Question: Tell me something about yourself for 5 minutes

Ans: I went on for about 3 minutes, then Dr Pratap Reddy, asked me ….share about your academics…I went on beyond 5 minutes.

My Learning: They wanted to know how I present myself

:           :           :           :           :           :           :           :           :           :           :           :           :

Some more inter related questions

:           :           :           :           :           :           :           :           :           :           :           :           :

Question: What was your specialization at MBA? My CV had the detail …..that I did my MBA during the years 1988-90

Ans: I replied Marketing specialization

My Learning: Probably my answer was not apt.

Question: In the field of marketing, which subject do you like? I was prompted many subjects

Ans: I said Marketing Research

My Learning: He wanted me to be more comfortable and further asked me

Question: What research tools do you use?

Ans: I said I use SPSS(PASW after it was taken by IBM) 18  version, Minitab

My Learning: He wanted finer details

Question: Not the soft ware's tools, He prompted Regression, Correlation …………..and went on

Ans: I added some more to the list

My Learning: They wanted me to talk all that I know about that question

Question: Suddenly which tool do you like the most?

Ans: I said Factor Analysis

My Learning: They wanted me to be sure of the broad field/ subject area/ topic/ precise to the point

Question: What do you understand between Principal Component analysis and factor analysis?

Ans: factor analysis is a data reduction multivariate technique. To do factor analysis, there are 3 methods one is principal component analysis, second is centroid method and the third Maximum Likelihood method. I was a bit nervous and finally went on more about explaining the answer. I even asked if permitted, I can show by running it in detail on my lap top using the package.

:           :           :           :           :           :           :           :           :           :           :           :           :

Some discussions on Case Studies

:           :           :           :           :           :           :           :           :           :           :           :           :

There were a series of questions that took shape as I started talking. I enjoyed the whole process and learnt a lot from it.

At a certain point of time during the discussion an aspect of perfection came out from my talk and Dr Pratap Reddy reiterated …..till today I don't think I am a perfect person, a perfect guide, a perfect father, a perfect husband. There is still a lot, lot more to learn

Shared a few good jokes……like "Face the brute" – said by Swami Vivekananda

He grilled me on every word that I wrote in my CV, suggested many changes. The way my mistakes were shown in my CV were very very polite and not at all satirical. I personally felt I have learnt something valuable on how B Schools look at a faculty's CV. Some Dos and Don'ts for aspiring faculty.

I learnt a few good things on my Presentation, Writings, Case Writings, and many more aspects

SOME THINGS THAT REALLY TOUCHED ME

·        The Treatment

·        The Environment

·        Free Transport and free Lunch for all Faculty. Annadatha sukhee Bhava

·        In front of Dr Pratap Reddy's room there is a dumb box on which is written Critique. Its open for anyone to suggest some lacunae that exist there at Dhruva College or aspects connected with the functioning of Dhruva B School

·        I was very warmly taken for lunch, a campus visit, library visit, hostel accommodation, Conference Halls, Class room Studios, Discussion rooms, a very big Auditorium(1500 seating capacity), Play area etc., I was surprised when the office boy told me that once in a week Dr Pratap Reddy spends one night at least in the hostel along with the students. They have a ground floor for Parking, First floor for Girls, Second floor for Chairman and Staff and Guest Rooms, Third and fourth for Boys. Terrace again one special room for Chairman.

·        Dr Pratap Reddy Sir even played a game of table tennis with me

·        To add more ……I had met two people who came for the interview from Chennai (Coimbatore) and Bangalore (Hassan District) staying in the College Guest Rooms.

Dr Suresh! It all depends on how you look at things.  I personally felt that it was a perfect way in which our personas in all the dimensions that we project in our CVs were adjudged on all fronts…….. in detail.

Subject: [MTC Global] Modern Interview questions to judge a Faculty leaked

Dear All,
I would like to share my experience in an interview for Assistant Professor In Marketing which was held very recently.
Q1: Why do you keep Dr. before your name as you are not medical practitioner?
a)  I tried to defend expertise in an area… but no time to listen my words… a great laugh.
Q2. Who has created 'Trisanku swargam"?
a) No answer from my side as am poor in puranas. ……..Satire on my Career Objective
Q3. Is Konda Surekha, a Tigress? (She is the local Ex MLA in my region)
a)  My answer " Of course, her way of leading the party and activists and the way she has defended in the recently concluded election ensures the caliber as a tigress.  But reply, She is a woman, how can she be Tigress……… Great Laugh .
Q4. You said you stay in Tiger Hills Colony? How many tigers are there?
a) I said, Once people used to say the place is sensitive area as some people found tigers, after some years, the name of the colony created in that name……… But the reply is another comedy…..
Interview is over…. You can leave now .
This is the way; our interview process is going on for recruiting a faculty in Management.
Let us hope and pray for change in the mindset of interviewers to judge the performance of Management Faculty and let us rebuild the value of management education.

*** As this happened at Dhruva (Interview committee with me in the chair, Dr UB Raju,an eminent Researcher & Professor of general management & entrepreneurship with industry, teaching and  consultancy experience of more than 3 decades  and Prof Gokul who is senior professor of Finance)  vis-a-vis Dr Suresh Chandra who posted "bits & pieces "of interview proceedings that lasted more than 45 minutes. PLEASE SEE BLOW BY BLOW SCENARIO OF INTERVIEW HELD ON July 24, 2013.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Context: The candidate was interviewed telephonically by Dr U B Raju based on which Dr Suresh Chandra  was called for a personal interview. If selected, the candidate would have been called for a couple demo sessions thru a stay on the campus for real time interaction with students and faculty of Dhruva-our regular practice of SELECTION.

INTERVIEW
*************

Seeing the CV, Chairman asked the candidate to introduce himself (TAKING ABOUT 5 MINUTES) and why he wanted to join Dhruva. Candidate STUTTERINGLY explained that he did Ph.D. from Kakatiya University and gave his introduction IN HARDLY ABOUT 1 MINUTE..

Chairman: So you are from Hanumkonda and so am I. I studied there and I have very fond memories.
Chairman eagerly asked about the candidate's locality "Tiger hills" in Hanumkonda. He jokingly asked why is it named as Tiger Hills Colony. Candidate replied hesitantly that "long back, tigers were seen over there".
In passing, chairman enquired about local political scenario...

Q1. Who is the local representative?
A1. Konda Surekha
Q2. Yes,she is a crusader; is she a tigress?
A2. Yes
Q3. How can she be? She is a woman.
(Great Laugh ...No,not at all! This was never to demean Smt Konda Surekha, nor women folk in general. As a matter of CSR initiative, Dhruva made a video capsule "violence against woman" post "Nirbhaya" episode in Delhi )

Q4. What is Ph.D. ?

A4. Doctor of Philosophy

Q5. What does it mean?

A5. knowing things perfectly about a particular subject.

Q6. Why prefix the name with the letters Dr?

A6. It shows attainment of perfection.

Chairman said: Yes I too prefix "Dr" to my name
(
"a great laugh", Dr Suresh complains---yes, I laughed at my self for keeping a "Dr" prefix to my name)  - but it is used only by medical practitioners in USA & other western countries unlike in India.

Q7. What is perfection?
A7. Knowing everything in a subject.

Chairman said: How can any body know every thing. The moment one claims "omniscience", one stops learning further. You can never improve if you claim perfection..Hence Perfection is tantamount to death.

Chairman and other members explained verbally and graphically what perfection is. (Chairman actually drew a sinusoidal curve with time on X-axis and level of perfection  on Y-axis, the curve is invariably asymptotic to 'line of perfection'. Again chairman jokingly quipped saying that when the monitor in a hospital ICU shows straight line, patient is supposedly dead)

Chairman said: (explaining the finer nuance of what is Ph.D ) Philosophy means field of knowledge. PhD means contribution to the existing field of knowledge.
It means 'Knowing more and more about less and less' and whoever claims Ph.D should have contributed at least a miniscule knowledge to the existing philosophy of knowledge in the his/her chosen domain

Q8. Your thesis topic is Lapsation of Policies in Insurance sector: A Study of select life insurance companies in India.
Is there any such word called lapsation?

A8. (Hesitating for a while) It is in google.

Q9. Is it there in Oxford dictionary?
A9. I do not know.

Chairman: I am afraid it is not.

"In any case, I appreciate your coining a new word/term. Just like Cooperative Competitiveness", it will also get into the dictionary/management lexicon", Chairman said assuringly

Q10. Reading your career objective, it sounds
flamboyant and utopian

Chairman: Your objectives are nowhere seem to be accomplishable unless you are capable of creating some Trisanku Swarga.

Chairman: By the by, who created Trisanku Swarga?
A10. The candidate said he did not know.
(
Satire on my Career Objective , the candidate laments
***How can I crack a satire; I only advised Dr Suresh to modulate his objective statement lest he'll end up desolate by not being  able to accomplish it.
please see his Objective statement :
"
Career Objective:
To obtain a challenging position in my teaching and research career which gives me the opportunity to enhance and strive for the development of advanced research outputs in my teaching & research area and to contribute the research fruits for the development of future managers and to lead the management field"

Q11. How are objectives set? What are their attributes?
A11.One should analyse oneself and set the
objectives.
Interview Board stated : Its SMART that you should follow in setting "objective"and asked::
Have you heard about
SMART ? what does it stand for ?
The candidate could not elaborate the acronym. Answer was given with explanation by the interview board.

Q12. Is there any possibility to do further research on your Ph.D topic?
A12. No answer
Interview Board: A thesis usually includes a prologue and an epilogue.

Q13: What is the distinction between prologue and epilogue?

A13: No answer.

Interview Board: explained.

Q14. What are the conclusions of your study?
A14. The candidate narrated the reasons for lapsation of policies.

Interview Board: These reasons are known otherwise also.
Q15. What is the role of agents in prevention of lapsation?
A15. Agents are supposed to monitor the due dates.

THERE WERE SEVERAL OTHER QUESTIONS INCLUDING "ACTUARIES" etc WHICH THE CANDIDATE COULD NOT ANSWER

(Interview is over…. You can leave now)... no,again! Interview ended on a cordial note with thanks from  both sides. Dhruva was hospitable and offered him to stay back for lunch with a promise that he would be intimated the result of the interview shortly.
