Re: [ACEsthetics] Larry Ellison on NSA and privacy. I totally agree with his angle.

my point with Canada was that, Canada can still be Canada, we can be us (the U.S.) but we are irrevocable allies in all things.  It  could have been that way with the North and South.  But, the ends don't justify the means in this debate, or it shouldn't matter at least.  The Constitution should ALWAYS justify the means.  Lincoln sidestepped the Constitution (indisputable) and that is always bad.  That is dictatorial.  We fought against a centralized, dictatorial government in England.

I will resist sending endless quotes from Lincoln that reflect his indifference with the slave population.  He was in favor of the Fugitive Slaw Law.  He was also in favor of sending them back to AFrica.  But that's not the point of this discussion.  It would blow your mind (or maybe not).

As for Canada, we could not afford Canada after we booted England.  We barely could afford ourselves.  Would they have been better had they been part of the US…don't know but I do know very little separates us now for most of Canada.

Just a historical side note.  The U.S. did try to help themselves to Canada and were ultimately repelled: in the war of 1812.   The British burned the original White House,  The U.S. burned York (now Toronto), nobody really won and neither side admits to losing, but no territory changed hands.  It, did reinforce the Canadian sense of distinctiveness from America.  Probably the best book on the war, in fascinating detail,  is "The Invasion of Canada" by Pierre Berton.

(You could take us now no problem, just with rednecks packing guns.)

Also, one of the primary differences between Americans and Canadians, is that Americans tend to be largely unaware of cultural differences between countries, where Canadians tend to be very conscious of them.   You won't find many Canadians who think we are just like America.
