Re: [ACEsthetics] The SEC SUCKS!!!!!!!

Bear Bryant had always said that he would not be the first to sign a black to play football at Alabama, but he wouldn't be the third either. He signed aq couple of black players as soon as Miiss signed the first. In fact, Braynt was instrumental in getting the South to want to integrate football by purposely scheduling USC to play in Birmingham when they had Sam Cunningham run all through the Alabama defense. Legend has it that after the game, Bryant met McKay in the center of the field. After McKay said "thank you", shaking Bryant's hand, Bryant said, "No, thank you."
After this game, the people of the South were ready to have blacks as full members of their football team. Bryant already had a black on the freshman team, but wanted to recruit more. By playing this game, he was able to do what he wanted.

Subject: [ACEsthetics] The SEC SUCKS!!!!!!!

Not really, but I posted earlier if anyone had heard of Nate Northington and got no replies.

Nate went to school with my wife and I met him Saturday at their reunion.

I told him if he'd turn around I might have recognized his back since that was all I saw of him on the football field.

Nate was the first African-American player to play in the SEC. Was the first to ever get a scholarship to any SEC school in any sport.

Talk about a pioneer. I kinda felt like I was talking with Jackie Robinson.

He's written a book about his experience.  Still Running.

Hard to believe in my lifetime things were that way. Glad to see I got to see that change.

BTW, Jack, Bear Bryant signed his first 5 years later.
