Re: [ACEsthetics] Sil-Tec For Prelim Impressions

Thank you, Arun. This was what I was led to believe. Now there are two very important follow-up questions that must be asked and answered:

1. The only reason given in the literature provided for it not being indicated for intraoral use that I could find was this:

Note:

Close container immediately after use.  Excess activator and elevated ambient temperature accelerate the setting time.  Insufficient activator or lower ambient temperature retard the setting time.  We recommend wearing gloves for kneading and adapting the material.

Warning

Sil-Tech Gel causes irritation in an uncured state.  Avoid contact with the skin and eyes.  In the event of accidental contact with the eyes, rinse with copious amounts of water and consult an ophthalmologist.  After skin contact, immediately rinse with soap and water.

So is this indeed the ONLY reason for its non-indication for the mouth SEEMS to be a relative one--irritation. Is that the only reason?

2. The next question whether there is not or even if there is something more than irritation--say carcinogenic properties--is: How relevant are these properties? Will an approximately 2-minute exposure to the gingival and mucosal tissues of the mouth carry significant risk of these issues, and HOW significant?

I would think that the manufacturer of such a product would have information and data to explain how relevant these "contraindications" might be. I suppose the question raised a different way is: Is Sil-tech contraindicated for use in the mouth, or is it not indicated for use in the mouth?

If george would comment, it would appreciated.

Folks.. here is the reply from Dr Tysowsky VP Ivoclar.

The official position is that Sil Tec is NOT appropriate for intra oral use and is a Lab material.

For those of you who like to read literature, the specs fromn the Company are attached.

Quick question:

Somewhere along the way, someone told me that Siltec was not supposed to be used in the mouth because it was carcinogenic or something. That source said that the manufacturer instructions are for lab use only. Is this true?

Reason I ask is that I just found out that the practice I work for on Wednesdays has been using it for all of their prelim impressions.

Anyone know definitively? I know I can call the manufacturer, and I will if I don't get a definitive response here.

Thanks.
