Re: [ACEsthetics] Happiest Places on Earth - ND

You also have to wonder if them passing a bill that almost 80% of people were against in poll after poll might contribute to the distrust as well! especially when asked what was in the bill, the response was that we would have to pass it first to find out.

NAH! It's the Tea Party's fault. ;-P

The problem with that argument is that the laws are LOCAL and, because of the ease of driving from one city or state to the next, they are unenforceable. The only way to stop that is to have border checks at the city limits, as if you were crossing into another country. How easy is it to drive to Virginia, buy some guns, then drive to DC to sell them?  Until there are NATIONAL gun laws, then the entire country is, truly, only as strong as the weakest state.
Yes, I did ignore the trust in public institutions. The US is very low on that. I wonder if voting 41 times to defund a bill, that, not only was legally passed, but where we had a national election and the proponent of that bill won by a landslide.

Some of our most violent cities have the strictest gun control.

It is interesting that none of you have said anything about

trust in public institutions

I wonder what role that plays.

Socialized health care, high taxes, gun control, government regulation of paid vacation….and they're happy? Ignorance is bliss, I guess. They just don't know what true inalienable rights are.

I bet they have a low crime rate and nearly everyone works.

Just a thought in light of all this violent resistance to Obamacare (maybe it's going to be good, and maybe not).

Do you know what countries finish at the top of virtually every quality of life indices that are put out each year?

These indexes are as follows:

Happiness
How is the health care?
quality of education
standard of living
quality of life
crime
trust in public institutions
vacation time

etc..

The winners are, and have been for years, the Scandinavian countries, Denmark, Finland, Sweden, Norway (all finishing in the top 11 and only Finland is out of the top 5).  Switzerland is #1 and the U.S. has fallen to 16.  In 1988 the U.S. was #1 in these indices. These countries have a democratically elected socialist government where taxes are high (approx. 70%)

I love freedom...for sure, and I love what this country stands for but isn't it worth looking at.....why do these countries fair so much better than we do when they have tax rates that would send most Republicans to jump off of a cliff?  No one cares what your tax rate is if you are happy, healthy, well educated, safe, etc..

Isn't it worth looking at why we are falling behind?  Even with our staunch defense of personal liberties?
