Bob,
It's a very complicated situation which has spun out of control.
Assad's government was a coalition of a minority Muslim sect - the Alawites - the Christians and the Shiites. The majority Muslim group in Syria are the Sunni. There is currently a cold/hot war going on between the Sunni's (S.Arabia) and Shiites (Iran) for control of the Muslim world. The war in Syria is a proxy fight of this war. There is also a large Kurdish minority in Syria which could destabilize the border region with Turkey. It would not be out of the realm of possibility to see the Kurdish Syrians leave Syria to create a Kurdish state with the Iraqi Kurds. This is very problematical for Turkey.
The opposition to Assad has been hijacked by Al Qaeda. We waited too long to support the dissidents and the opposition has been coopted by the fanatics (no, not the Republicans). The terrorist groups of Hezbollah and Hamas are involved in this conflict. This country is comprised of many ethnic minorities, including Jews, Catholics, Alawites, Shiites, Sunnis, Kurds and the Druze. There has been ethnic genocide on both sides.
There is no easy and quick solution for this problem. Let the UN Handle it.
Here is a perspective on the Syrian situation.

Hey, I haven't followed this very closely but I am puzzled, not that we want there to be retribution for chemical weapons use (if it is in fact, true) but that Obama wants to act unilaterally. Haven't we learned yet that this unilateral (U.S. policing the world) thinking doesn't work!! Why don't we turn this over to NATO and the U.N..
We always act like we are in charge of everything.
any thoughts? Am I not clued into what is really going on?
