Re: [MTC Global] [Weekend Big Debate] Teaching is a myth but Learning is real

Dear All,

Let me put my concept of learning. Learning is realization from within about
something. Realization cannot be thrust upon from outside but it is spontaneous
from within. Realization occurs if it is just sparked by somebody called as
teacher or Guru through any means or method. Teacher is just a path finder, a
kindling catalyst. Hence, teacher can neither be replaced buy something else,
like MOOC nor be done away with. The role of a teacher is like a mother,
"Maooli", essentially based on faith, trust, self-less service and love. Whatever
a teacher does or does not do is called a teaching-learning process. In fact,
teaching is more or less passive but learning is always active. Therefore in our
ancient csriptures the word often used is "Shikane (Learning: Sikhana)" rather
than "Shikavine (Teaching: Sikaanaa)". Teaching means making one t learn to
learning. One can learn without teacher or teaching! Thus, teaching is a myth,
but learning is real. But note often a myth helps derive the real; like, Prakruti
and Purusha. Obviously, teaching or teacher can neither be done away with or
replaced by something else.

The teaching outcomes or learning outcomes (as the end objective of teaching),
good or bad, are seen, visible, sensed and realized over a long period of time.
The means are of less important. For instance, Dr. Ambedkar faced all the odds
beyond one's imagination but the outcomes wonderfully awesome. Listening to a
visual CD on Mahabharata or Ramayana will have not such life-long
impressions as compared to that listening to Ramayana stories through the mouth
of a grand-mother, lying on her lap before going to bed.

The process of learning to learn can however be accelerated by some external
means like classroom teaching, e-learning, on-line learning, MOOC, CDs, etc.,
but these are mere tools. Growth is dependent upon the potential of both teacher
and taught. There is a wonderful Mantra in Atharvashirsha: Do not give any
"vidya" out of greediness to any undeserving student (Ashishya), and if one
gives he commits a sin!

One more thing, when the world is after e-learning, Germany has adapted a
blending education model: balanced blending of e-learning and classroom
teaching. There is no substitute for teacher-taught interaction. The two minds
must resonate for opening the doors for a student's learning. Teacher cannot be
replaced by any other in-animate accessory/tool.

Regards.

Yours,
