RE: [MTC Global]

Dear All,

In India, development in any sector is driven by government, which in turn is again advised by developed country lobby that tries to sell its old technology and refurbished products that it appears advanced to us, under the banner of liberalization and globalization, like nuclear reactors. Only that industry develops as per customer needs where there are modern products that can be bought, possessed and consumed on per piece basis individually by customers, like cars etc!

And that too, in present circumstances of economic crisis, government has been collecting revenues and taxes from different sectors with stringency in order to meet its own expenses, fiscal deficit and funds for development programs, which I am sure everybody is aware how funds are leaking out and not percolating to the desired levels! Government is perhaps, not taken much initiative to improve the competitiveness of that sector from the point of view of quality, productivity and supply chain! Much is on paper, less in action as incentives or encouragement for the industry.  As a result, our Indian companies are investing more abroad and setting up factories than in domestic sector.

Although government has opened up infrastructure sector under public private partnerships, much more is desired and speed of development is too slow and that too involves funds embezzlement and bad governance.

Unfortunately, tourism has not received that focus from the successive governments, unless all governments have some common focus on certain sectors irrespective of their political ideologies. Infact the minister and bureaucrats of that ministry, need to be interested and focused to take concerted initiative to develop a plan for tourism! Ministers and bureaucrats are shuffled whimsically and nor do they take an interest; in fact they are also shunted out at the behest of private sector when their vested interest gets hurt by strong and righteous policies! infact tourism should receive the importance as an infrastructure sector . It will also add to the improvement of environment and climate, provided the concerned stakeholders maintain it diligently! Local population and tourists need to be educated strongly and cleanliness is given a priority in terms of maintenance along with other facilities. Infact as rightly pointed out by other participants , we need to revive our cultural heritage! We will rather save dollars and do not have to shop around the world for technology to develop this sector of tourism, which has so much economic and employment potential  as also pointed out by another gentleman in this forum. It will help to earn much needed forien exchange.

Similarly , it can be said that Indian industrialists also do not want to invest in any project that has longer period of investment and uncertainty. In fact , very few in private sector have taken any sustained interest to develop our natural wealth like tourism, nor have they taken any initiative to influence the government and bureaucrats to formulate a long term policy initiative for implementation. As educationists, we too should take initiative to include the subject as a part of MBA curriculum! Perhaps this MTC forum may serve as a platform to form and mobilize a kind of strong opinion initiative  in that direction!

Macau is a very small island, close to Singapore, and 100% depends on tourism. India is blessed with rich culture, heritage and natural beauties but we failed to market our products to outside world because of lack of awareness, government apathy and recent rapes incident ( today reported in Assam) / other social disorders.

On other hand , countries like Singapore creating artificial attractions and drawing the people across the world....

I have addressed many such issues in one of leading books titled ' International Tourism Management' in two years back ( available in Amazon).

Happy Knowledge Sharing.

Dear all.

Visited coral islands,  Pattaya,  Malaysia yesterday and found its beaches really very neat and clean. So orderly planned and developed.  Whole society and economy entirely depend on  tourism.

We in India have best of everything, nice hill stations, large desert,  vast sea coast and very pleasant weather at many places most of the time.  Still our share of world tourism is virtually negligible.

What a great potential for growth of employment and economy  in single industrial sector with proper priority and development of tourism related areas.

 Not impossible? ????
