Edgar Ngo'o, Cameroon Defence Minister, said on Monday in Douala that 4,850 men and women would be recruited as soldiers by the Cameroon Armed Forces (CAF) and the national gendarmerie.

He said that the vast recruitment exercise was coming because of rising insecurity in Cameroon's land borders with Nigeria, Chad and the Central African Republic (CAR).

PANA reports that the exercise would be for Cameroonian youth aged between 18 and 23.

Ngo'o explained that 2,350 of the new recruits would be for the Armed Forces, army, navy and air force, while 400 other youth would be recruited after a competitive examination as non-commissioned officers (NCOs).

Besides, the national gendarmerie would recruit 1,800 gendarme students and 300 NCO students.
