Re: [MTC Global] [Policy Watch] Multibillion dollar project Aadhaar fell flat

Dear all,

The over-ambitious project of UID, as brought out by Prof. Bholanth
Dutta, is in fact not only with holes, but also a potential threat to
the security of Indian citizens. In my own case, after enrolling for
UID for self and members of my family, the process was messed up
altogether. After so many queries and reminders, to my utter shock, I
was informed that part of the database containing data of hundreds of
people was inaccessibe as the computer had crashed. Actually, the
process was outsourced to one of the private agencies, with
inexperienced staff undertaking the process. I was stunned to learn
that there was no data back up procedures in place. As a result I had
to take the trouble of re-enrolling for some of my members of family.
Moreover, I am deeply concerned about the personal sensitive
information of people which was said to be lost, or might have fell
into wrong hands. Such data has the potential of being misused or
parted with other vested interests.

At the macro level, think of the information security hazards if
hostile elements get access to the data, through loopholes in the so
called system. Before embarking on such massive projects, consensus
must have been ensured among the stakeholders and a clear road map to
laid out with proper policies and procedures in place. We Indians paid
such a huge cost to learn a lesson, in a nation where all citizens do
not have the 'luxury' of a square meal everyday.

A deeply concerned citizen,
Maharajan K
