were young and learnt to behave in a manner that was acceptable in
the past. But time does not stand still for anyone. The new young
take the place of the old and bring about their own styles of
behavior that is relevant to the present.
To stay relevant is to adapt to the change of behavior patterns. Now
any change that we wish to bring in our behavior requires unlearning
the past and relearning for the future. There are also differences in
the environment that may be either support or suppress the learning
process.
I knew a relative employed in a bank and who was asked to continue
working even following his retirement. He worked there for a while
but soon found out that his younger colleagues at the bank avoided
talking among themselves in his presence. He began to feel the
difficulty in working with them as they avoided taking his guidance.
He decided to quit the bank calling it a day. This is a natural
phenomenon in the work environment.
In the education environment, things are different. It is a learning
environment and encourages contact with students as well as to learn
by communicating sympathetically with them. Learning to understand
their needs and modifying one's behavior so as to become acceptable
is the teacher's role.
As Dr Waghodekar mentions, in our own lives, we can adapt to change
wholeheartedly and practice the five things mentioned that I humbly
reproduce:
1.Vision sensing probable changes and trends in the next 10 years.
2.Mix with the young.
3.Do publish something in Journals.
4.Maintain health and be active.
5.Social responsibility: serving others
I will also add: We must seek relevance by becoming useful; doing
activities that have or add value for a small monetary consideration
