                         Subject: Let's Emulate the Scottish Political Experience

 

On September 18, 2014, after 307 years of a union with England, the people of Scotland will exercise their right to freely choose their sovereignty and determine their international political status, with no external compulsion or interference. The Scottish referendum of independence is a teachable moment for Southern Cameroonians who are striving to be masters of their own destiny to arm themselves with the power that knowledge gives.

Like the Scottish people, Southern Cameroonians have been yearning to reclaim their right to enshrine a sovereign parliament and choose its own leaders since they repudiated their unconscionable union with French Cameroon.

The Scottish political experience is a reminder to the naysayers that someone is always doing something, someone else said was impossible. French Cameroonians and their French masters are being reminded by Southern Cameroonians of Woodrow Wilson's admonition that, "national aspirations must be respected; people may be dominated and governed only by their own consent…Self determination is not a mere phrase; it is an imperative principle of action…"

Southern Cameroonians who are privileged to live in the United States of America which pioneered the assertion of the right to self determination in 1776, by declaring independence from Britain, owe their oppressed compatriots in the occupied fatherland  a duty to teach them how to approximate truth through a patient exposure of the falsehood imposed by the Pro-French oppressor.

In a bid to reap the benefits of the Scottish experience for the liberation struggle of Southern Cameroons, SCNC North America will send a team of activists to Scotland to witness this political landmark learn the rudiments of the Scottish case and court some diplomatic fixtures for the struggle.

The Southern Cameroons observer delegation to the Scottish referendum of separation will shine a bright light on our predicament and how similarly situated people have found solutions to similar problems.

The Scottish mountaineer and writer, William Hutchison Murray puts it most succinctly in his autobiography, The Evidence of Things Not Seen…until one is committed, there is hesitancy, the chance to draw back, always ineffectiveness. Concerning all acts of initiative (and creation), there is one elementary truth, the ignorance of which kills countless ideas and splendid plans: that the moment one definitely commits oneself, then Providence moves too. All sorts of things occur to help one that would never otherwise have occurred. A whole stream of events issues from the decision, raising in one's favor all manners of unforeseen incidents and meetings and material assistance, which no man could have dreamt would have come his way. I have learnt a deep respect for one of Goethe's couplets: Whatever you can do or dream you can, begin it. Boldness has genius, power and magic in it!

Fellow Southern Cameroonians, the Scottish referendum of separation teaches us that throughout history, the boundaries of nations shift a great deal over time in ways that make the proclamations of "territorial integrity" truly ludicrous.

We must realize that history is shaped by vocal minorities and not docile majorities. We must seize the moment and shape the course of our history once and for all.
