Re: [cameroon_politics] Fw: [camnetwork] RETIRED GOVERNOR PETER OBEN ASHU MAKES PEACE WITH (GOD) HIS MAKER

Well Albert Usmanu,
If he did not feel some heavy guilt in him, why apologise publicly? Must there be genocide for any crime against humanity to be qualified as such? Branding of a people is one big step to start encouraging people to be nursing xenophobic tendencies, and then what do you think will follow? What did he mean by cam - no - go? and where in his opinion did these people come from and where should they go, and why? Jews were called Vermin in Germany, and the Hutus or Tutsis in Rwanda were called Cocroaches. You have many such brandings in history prior to genocide. Even the Americans had to call North Vietnamese - Vietcong and that was enough identification tosingle them and then kill them!
If you clearly do not see any grevious abuse here, kindly think again. A snowballing effect on anything wouldn't  occur if it didn't start in the first place.

People:

Governor Peter Oben Ashu was DO for Bamenda Central in the 1970's and his office was a stone throw from my tattered Old Town house. We played football almost daily next to his office at the Apostolic Church ground. I saw him all the time in his comings and goings without a single bodyguard. I know his daughter who attended Lourdes at the same time that I attended secondary school.
South Africa had the Truth and Reconciliation Commission to deal with its ugly past. Rwanda that lost close a million people in a 90 day orgy of senseless violence came up with Gacaca community justice in part to forgive its murderers and today is a country that is doing quite well.
I could understand a Bami or Bassa victim of the Maquisard era in Cameroon refuse to forgive perpetrators of the orchestrated pogrom in Cameroon. But us, so-called victims of Governor Oben? What exactly is the nature of the victimization occasioned by Governor Ashu? Emotional distress? Any loss of limb and life?
On my next trip to Buea, I will look for Gov. Oben, buy him a drink and discuss our mutual experience in Abakwa. This much I know, forgiveness is a command!

The man who is highly credited with setting up a "Neo-Nazis" rule in the SW Province of Cameroon and who was relieved of his duty very unceremoniously in a Gubernatorial reshuffle by the same President Biya who appointed him; Governor PETER OBEN ASHU attended church service at the Bokwango Parish accompanied by his close family members. Reports from those who saw him at the church service say he put on a cheerful appearance as he greeted parishioners after service.

In conclave with the Parish Council, Peter the Cameroon Hitler explained his Reign of Terror in Buea as "Human Weakness". He is said to have confessed and requested "Forgiveness from Anglophones of North West origin" saying he acted the way he did because his Paymasters expected nothing less from him..."I was merely trying to please my Paymaster, President Biya because that is what he expected of me in order to maintain my Governor job". In a remorseful tone that amounted to a Mea Culpa from a previously very arrogant Governor, massa Peter Oben pleaded for clemency, understanding and the human milk of forgiveness..."I am asking my NW brothers to forgive my trespasses. It was not deliberate. The truth is; I don't really hate Bamenda people as I am being characterized. That is not really who I am for those who know me".

Such antics can pass muster in a Parish context but certainly not in a Tribunal for Crimes Against Humanity. Violations of Human Rights cannot any longer be justified on grounds of blind obedience of hierarchy even if one were a Military Governor or a Mercenary. That argument had long been buried at the annals of the Nuremberg Trials.

However, it is a commendable act when humans express contrition and remorse for Crimes against humanity especially when they have been stripped of the claws that made them predators. So the question still lingering in the air is: Would Bayangui Governor Peter Oben Ashu behave differently if he were to be reappointed Governor again at some point in the future? That would depend on whether his dangerous "Acts of Terror" were Compulsive of Congenital.
