[MTC Global] Goals & Objectives

GOAL is a quantified OBJECTIVE;OBJECTIVE is a qualitative GOAL

GOAL is a short term OBJECTIVE;OBJECTIVE is a long term GOAL

GOAL and OBJECTIVE are coterminus and in a way interchangeable

Dear Colleagues,
Goals are of short term nature such as 10% yearly increase in sales whereas objectives carry a larger time span.To achieve an objective goals in different areas are required(i.e. 1% reduction in cost,5% reduction in expenses etc.) The objective may be to be a market leader by having a sizeable market share over a period of 5 years.

Dear Mr.Ramesh Vemuganti,

It is a good question to ask about the difference between a goal and an objective, although many people use these terms as if they are synonymous.

An objective is a statement of intent. For instance, a company CEO may say that his company's objective is to make good profits. But when the same CEO says that he wants the company to achieve 20 % return on investment in the next year, it is a goal. In other words, a goal is a quantified objective.

I hope, I have made my views clear.

Dear Colleagues

Food for thought. What is the universally acceptable difference between a Goal & an Objective?

Although Management, in its various facets, forms & fundas, has a history of over 2 centuries ,
some confusion still prevails on Goals & Objectives for a Manager.

Goals have a time frame & Objectives are aligned in the fulfilment of Goals. Losing 5 kgs in next 1 month is a goal - task & time frame. Objectives are series of things one does to lose weight, like diet, walking, yoga, attitude, etc. Some more clarity is needed as many Managers use Goals & Objectives, interchangeably

Few Management teachers & educators also get confused here.

Members can opine, with less of theory & more examples.
