RE: [MTC Global] [Jam Session] Future of Business Education

Respected Colleagues

This is very true.
There is still the terrible disconnect between academicians ( each operate from their and from their silos) and of course between academic and industry. Unless the first aspect is addressed seriously the second will never see the light of the day.
There simply has to be " Cross functional" courses and programs which would bring together faculty from different areas including Engineering  with Business School faculty  which in turn would foster better and more purposeful interactions with the industry.
During my recent trip to India I saw some very very disturbing aspects; ( It was present even earlier but now appears to be the top priority).
The "ranking" of Business schools gravitating towards placements. In simple terms the student joins "a " Business school treating it as a "placement house". If this be the case Business Schools will soon perish. Perhaps laws need to be enacted and enforced to make this activity illegal. ( something like scanning to ascertain sex of child is illegal). We have to think on those lines.
The other aspect is many of even "earlier" so called "Good" Business schools have a tendency to appoint ' fresh from school' alumni as lecturers and Junior Profs and such individuals have no exposure to the industry whatsoever and cannot share any knowledge with students. Have individuals in Business schools with some minimum prescribed / mandatory period of service in industry. If certain business schools can make this requirement mandatory for students to join a MBA program why can this not be enforced for aspiring lecturers? Again this could be and should be part of the ranking! This does not mean that we should not induct a certain predetermined percentage of young or fresh blood every year. Get the HR involved here.
As in Germany we must have faculty who teach at least 2 different subjects, (could be related )which would foster within the individual a better understanding of inter-subject appreciation and opening up of silo operations!

There is a strong feeling and evidence that perhaps the MBA is not nearly as important today as it was 20, 25, 30 years ago. Why MBA is losing its relevance? Many people say that MBA is no longer preparing people for today’s business world. There is a boom in undergraduate courses but slow down in the post graduate courses.

Request esteemed MTCians’ reflections………..
