RE: [MTC Global] Not just Manager but Global Manager: Shifting focus

The first thing we need is to decide as to what should be the Strategic focus of the management education?

In my humble opinion, it should aim at humanised capacity building in the first place with multi-focal professional competencies and also the abilities. Job market needs have four layers of requirement – [1] Venue Level, [2] Organization Level, [3] Industry Level and [4] Strategic Levels of Decision Making.

The course structure should be such as to lead the graduate from the lowest level to reach the highest level. The Harvard model of 'all-in-one' that entered India with IIM-A, and followed in general by all and sundry B-schools; will have to be reconsidered. There is need to give a trial for the approach seen in six Ivy-league schools of US who have different focuses of purpose; like the Sloan's School is for the scientists and engineers to learn management to converting their scientific ideas into business proposals. They call it cookie cutter approach.

ICT is going to be the dominant driver of future designs. BITSConnect 2.0 is an initiative to leveraging this capability. Education is not about competition, but about Co-creation. Similarly the practice of exhaustive and detailed syllabus drafting will have to be abandoned; indication of the scope of the subject and learning outcome would be enough.

Regards to All,

Dear Prof. Bholanath ji,
Congratulations for undertaking Curriculums-2020 Global Initiative; it takes strong leadership, willingness to adapt to changing needs and a keen awareness of the global marketplace. Having such a foundation can only foster innovative, game-changing technology. I shall certainly look forward to keeping active link with the group on this.

The middle class in developing countries will redefine markets. In parallel to population growth, we'll see a marked shift in the balance of economic power.  Western tastes and influences will no longer dominate the world consumer goods market, as the buying power of middle classes in China, India, Brazil, and Russia booms. From less than 2%, Indian Middle Class will have over 10% of 2020 Global buying power - at no.3 leading to 25% by 2030 becoming no;1. We should expect to see global tastes in fashion and entertainment more influenced by these newly dominant economies. Between now and 2020, nearly 1 billion youth will reach adulthood and Urban areas will be home to more than 60% of the world's population by 2020.

  • To foster future success, enterprises must begin to operate with a mindset that benefits its customers and its employees.
  • Success will require a blend of hiring people who grew up in these growth economies as well as flexible and adaptable business processes that develop products, services and messages to meet local preferences, tastes and needs.
  • Collaboration and cooperation of all stakeholders on any level(s) cross the organization(s) to make the full potential of all involved people available for the enterprises in 2020.
  • We need to cater for a global, distributed, diverse workforce, many of whom are working from small hubs or home office.
Congratulations once again.

Thanks and regards,
