Re: [MTC Global] Leadership

Man is borne with innate (godly) qualities like love, honesty, integrity, fairness, etc., that are either
strengthened or diluted over the passage of time dependent upon the environment, culture, education, etc.,
that help one to derive the acquired qualities. Modern management theories are turning but slowly to innate
qualities that are good for the health of one and society. I would like to point out that religions are
rituals based on certain principles in terms of innate qualities that finally lead to so called spiritualism
that is one and the same without regrads to what religion one belongs to.

Self Management Leadership is the DNA of the entire management gamut. Consider any modern tool like TQM
that calls total involvement from every one top to bottom. In fact, leadership is the totality or sum and
substance one possesses in terms of innate and acquired qualities to a higher degree compared to others
called followers.

We are the part and parcel of nature and our behaviour need to be aligned with nature's laws. Leaders and
Management scientists are expected to unfold this natural mystery.

Dear All,
Dr. Stephen Covey, in his book, "Principle-Centered Leadership"addressesglobal opinionthat "human capital,
most specifically the leadership gap, is their number one concern as we look to the future".

Honesty, integrity, fairness, trust, hope, and grace are a few of these principles – self-evident and
self-validating natural laws that don’t change or shift; maybe, just maybe they are getting buried in
the complexity of modern day leadership and life.

Could this be what we are missing, what we are looking past when it comes to the leadership gap?

1. Honesty:Being truthful and staying true to what you said you were going to do regardless of the
situation.
2. Integrity: Aligning actions with values – doing what you say, saying what you mean, and being what
you seem.
3. Fairness:Making judgments that are free from discrimination – treating people without prejudice.
4. Trust:Relying on or place confidence in someone or something without the expectation of anything in
return.

5. Hope: Believing in and sharing the idea that the future will be better than the present

6. Grace:Honoring someone by one’s presence – an ethic of kindness, generosity, concern, and
care.
Covey goes on to say, â€Å"to value oneself and, at the same time, subordinate oneself to higher purposes
and principles is the paradoxical essence of highest humanity and the foundation of effective leadership.Ã

PUNSARI, GUJARAT:Punsari
village, barely 100 km from Ahmedabad, could be a textbook case of development. Closed-circuit cameras,
water purifying plants, air-conditioned schools, Wi-Fi, biometric machines - the village has it all. And all
of it was done in a matter of eight years,
at a cost of a mereRs.16
crore.

The man behind the transformation is its young sarpanch - 31-year-old Himanshu Patel. A graduate from North
Gujarat University, Mr Patel had won the panchayat
polls in 2006, at the age of 23.

Back then, the village didn't even have proper roads, power or water. The panchayat funds were in deficit.
Mr Patel found though money come aplenty, it was the
utilisation that's at fault.

Over
the next eight years, together with the district administration, he stitched up funds from under various
heads - the District Planning Commission, Backward Regional Grant Fund, 12th Finance Commission, and those
under Self Help Group Yojnas - and began the
development of the village.

The results are obvious. Recently, a team from the Central ministries of rural and urban development had
come to study the "Punsari model".

But the young sarpanch is already onto his next projects - a unit producing electricity out of plastic waste
and e-rickshaws for garbage collection. "The state
government has already sanctionedRs.52
lakh," he said.

Understanding the importance of education, Mr Patel has earmarked a chunk for the village school. From 300
students in 2006, the number has now doubled to over
600. The classrooms are not just air-conditioned but also have computers and projectors.

"We have managed to attract more children," said teacher Narendra Jhala. Vidya Patel, a student of Class 7,
thinks learning is fun. "The audio visual presentations
make it easier to remember our lessons," she said.

Interestingly, Mr Patel has not asked for a penny from the MLA fund, and over the last eight years, the
village has just gotRs.1
lakh from the MP fund.

"We
didn't feel the need, since there is enough from various budgetary grants of the state and Centre. If you
utilise it properly, you can work wonders,'' said Mr Patel.

"The village has demonstrated how understanding various schemes available and leveraging them properly can
bring about a qualitative change," said Himmatnagar
collector Banchha Nidhi Pani.
