Viva voce is only a process of evaluating the candidate in terms of their preparedness in terms of oral presentation as there is no scope of presentation otherwise. This also helps in helping other researchers in participating in the methodology used by the researcher. The scope of study will throw light about new frontiers of areas that can be researched. In some cases, the researchers undertaking research will fine tune their research. There are instances where the researchers have looked at alternative analysis including SEM, R etc.. Hence viva voce is a broader platform for the researcher to exhibit their hard laboured reserach for say 3 to 4 years. I do not agree with the viva voce examinations conducted in camera as is prevalent in many universities...

Public viva and open defense is must not only to present the research findings before and august audience but also to defend the questions raised. It is a filtering process. Besides pre-submission viva is also inevitable. 
But it is highly unfortunate to see gimmicks in many univeristies/colleges which is absolutely meaningless. Research nowadays is oriented towards degree, designation and dough.

In India, Asian Countries, UK and Australia Viva is the final stage for closing the doctoral process. On the contrary in most western based process does not include viva of any kind.
