Dear Prof. Dutta,
Please do not try to further devalue our Ph.D. standards
in the name of the western based process. In this regard,
my experiences as Vice Chancellor (who is at the helm of
affairs in maintaining academic standards standard of the
University and myself coming with rich experience from
the IIT Kanpur system as the Chairman of Senate PG
Committee) were very disappointing. Hence, let me submit
that pre-submission presentation as well as open Ph.D.
viva, where a scholar has to answer all the queries
raised by the external examiners as well as the audience
present in Viva should be strictly adhered to in our
academic curriculum. On the basis of my own experience as
Vice Chancellor of Utkal University (the oldest
University in Odisha) for three years from 2008 to 2011,
I had noted many unethical practices being adopted by the
scholars in connivance with many so-called intellectuals
as Guides/ Supervisors. Quality has had been compromised
for the sake of getting the degrees and many gimmicks are
being followed. The quality of D.Sc. and D.Lit thesis by
an examination systems still the worst. Better not to
speak about it. At least, few of them can be filtered and
improved at the stage of Viva voce examination stage,
which is drawn from my own experience.
I am one of the proponents of maintaining the autonomy of the
Universities. But with mushroom growth of public as well as
private Universities and lack of leadership at the VC level owing
to many factors, I fear that we can maintain the quality of Ph.D.
thesises. Under these circumstances do not advocate of an
opportunity to open up the flood gates for award of Ph.D. degrees
in our country.
