[MTC Global] 30 professors from Tamil Nadu grab UGC Emeritus Fellowship

Professors from Tamil Nadu have grabbed the maximum number of Emeritus Fellowship this year of the University Grants Commission (UGC), closely followed by Andhra Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh.

From Tamil Nadu, 30 professors — retired or nearing retirement — have been selected to continue research for the next two years, without any restriction in their position or pay scale. A total of 126 candidates have been selected from the country this year, out of the 200 slots allocated by the UGC.

These professors would carry out research in subjects of their choice, including aquaculture, marine science and bioscience, mathematics,  physics and engineering  under the broad classification of science as well as Tamil, commerce, management and education that come under the ambit of humanities.

They would continue the study in the research centres in the major universities such as the Madras University, Madurai Kamaraj University, Bharathidasan University, Annamalai University as well as other stipulated institutions recognised by the UGC.

The professors to support their research would receive a monthly grant of Rs 31,000 as per the revised pay scale announced in December, along with contingency fund that provides for their travel within the country and stationery, journals and postages sponsored by the UGC.

Foreign trips in connection with the research would also be allowed once a year, along with the approval of the institution or university. The State that has clinched close to one-fourth of the total selections by the UGC has been consistently receiving the same fraction of fellowships every year due to the quality of research, feels Ravichandran, general secretary of Association of University Teachers.

"This is a grant awarded to teachers for their post-doctoral work and Tamil Nadu has consistently been receiving around 30 scholarships every year. The research usually covers a wide variety of topics, not restricted to sciences alone," Ravichandran added, reported New Indian Express.
